Detroit General Development

The oversized windows give it a modern feel, but the materials an historic feel. I like the contrast. can't wait to see what they look like when built. It looks like developers have evolved from Woodward Place.

Totally agree. This type of architecture shows a true harmony between classic elements and contemporary spacial qualities.

I couldn't believe it when I saw it, really. This is the good infill stuff that's going up now in St. Louis, Cincinnati, and the rest. I thought it would have been a few more years before Detroit saw these type of developments. Between this and Centurion Place, maybe we'll see a trend away from Woodward Place and vinyl siding.

Does anyone know if there's anything going on with the Lindell AC building? I saw about 6 workers doing work on the exterior of the building today.

Hmm. Odd. I hope they're not planning on wasting even more money by doing one of those temporary storefront makeup jobs for the Superbowl on a building that'll only get demolished shortly.

They should have just demolished it right after the ceremonial ground breaking then put a fence around it with a sign describing the new transit center. At least that way people will see development happening. Instead they now have a bunch of signs in CBD telling visitors that there's a transit center there when clearly it's an abandoned building.

I hope not too many people end up going there expecting to catch a ride somewhere.

It's a litte late for the type of improvments that would be necessary for a temporary storefront, but maybe they plan on a quick sprucing up of the building's exterior...ala the fine arts building?

They could even paint the first floor bright red to mask its abandonment! :P

Well I didn't mean it to be actually used as a temporary store, but rather just a window dressing that'd make it appear as if something's in it. For example, Lindell AC displayed various Detroit sports memorabilia in windows before they closed. It's actually considered a landmark among Detroit sports fans. I thought they might just do something similar for the Superbowl. Which might be kinda cool.

However, for me, it's more important to display signs of redevelopment during the Superbowl. For example, I think a half dozen or so giant cranes in the new MGM lot alone is going make a huge impact on the image of the city.

BTW, it's amazing how quickly they've moved on the new MGM lot. I think just about all of the buildings' foundations are complete. It just goes to show what motivated developer can do in the city. Having the casino money obviously helps.

Question: do any of you know what's planned for the lot where a city parking structure used to be next to the Ramada Inn on Bagley?

Temporary Bar? Finally you are back posting MOJO. LOL!

Yup I'm back. I was on the East Coast for a while (with a job I HATED), so I was out of the loop. I scored a rather nice job back here, so I'm happy again. Trying to figure out where I'm going to move to in Downtown, midtown, or Riverfront. It's a really exciting time to be a Detroiter.

Posted at the very beginning of this thread in late 2004.

Does anyone know how this is coming along, and who the developers/architects are, and when this will be complete?

Also, what about the former Kresge Building at State and Woodward? It's a 10-story, tannish building that I've also been is undergoing a restoration. Who is doing that one? I wrote Kraemer (who said they aren't part of this one), and don't know who is doing it either.

I haven't been in the Fowler Building to talk to Ziggy in a while. I looked at the booklet he gave me, but I don't see an architect's name anywhere on it. I have to laugh though...in the two smallest units you can apparently have a bed or a couch. Want both? Too bad!

There are 40 units total, with prices ranging from $123,580 to $292,600. They were having open houses for quite a while, but I haven't seen a sign for one in a few months...maybe they are all sold out. There is a sign on the ground floor announcing the "Aspen Lounge."

1201 Woodward is slated to be residential, but conversion is very slow...as in they have been working on and off for years. There used to be an office on the ground floor, but that has recently disappeared to make way for some Super Bowl store.

A bit of update on the MGM development.

I saw the first of above ground structure this morning.

It seems like a ramp to a parking structure, not surprisingly located by the Grand River exit on North bound I-75.

So that's one structure down... Anyone with information on how many structures will be built in that lot?
