This is a blindingly stupid decision on the part of the UCF Board of Trustees and Dr. German.

https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/os-ne-ucf-medical-affiliations-20191115-w3lels5dwvebpioisjdtbmf6ka-story.html

UCF med students will now receive their 3rd year training at such highly regarded (snark) hospitals as "Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Ocala Medical Regional Center and North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville." "Other clerkship sites include Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, NCH Healthcare System in Naples, Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando and the Orlando VA Medical Center."

Without the help of Advent and OH UCF would not even have a med school.

Really, really dumb.

Dr. German was either really naïve or else politics got to the Board of Trustees when the decision was made. I hope the Sentinel digs in and finds out which it was.

HCA is a garbage company that probably shouldn't exist anymore.

There are a lot of larger systemic issues about the money in health care that unfortunately are going to keep impacting overall patient care in ways like this that are very negative.

But HCA was the breeding ground for our paragon of virtue, Rick Scott! Oh wait...

Or Florida Hospital and Orlando Health really were just in a different position: they both are dominant in Orlando, and felt they aren't really gaining too much by partnering with a UCF Teaching Hospital: they'd be going after their own business at another campus., and presumably sending some of its business to an institution where they have at least a little bit less control and little desire to cannibalze any existing facilities. HCA currently is a minor player in this market and likely wanted a way in, which is really difficult with Certificate of Need laws. That meant to get into the market, they needed a much better proposal then the other 2, and HCA gave just that:

Florida Hospital gave a better proposal then Orlando Health, so to compare HCA vs FH:

- HCA offered to give UCF half the board seats, while FH only would do a third

- HCA offered 20% equity while FH offered none

- HCA offered UCF a bit of control over leadership and philanthropy, while FH needed control of all of that

- HCA proposed at least 580 residences while FH proposed at least 179

- HCA proposed to make it into a hub facility while FH wanted it to be a satellite facility

- HCA's deal is expected to mean an extra $200m over the FH deal for UCF

- HCA's deal provides significant tax revenue, while FH is tax exempt

The only area where FH wins on was OH and FH agreed to play nice with UCF as long as UCF worked with them to prevent any new competition to the area. HCA saw an opportunity while FH and OH saw a threat. UCF's clear best choice was the HCA deal, its other choices were to take a bad deal from FH to keep the incumbents happy, or not open a teaching hospital at this time, which likely is what OH and FH both wanted as well.

The “mystery candidate” was made public today as University of Missouri Chancellor Alexander Cartwright threw his cap into the ring to be UCF’s next president.

And, as is often the case, another board appointed by our dubious recent governors chose to flout the rules to make it happen. I suppose we should be numb to such shenanigans by now.

UCF has a new president-elect: University of Missouri Chancellor Alexander Cartwright. After all, who’d want to be the leader of an SEC school when you can take charge of a National Champion!?!

Congrats to Dr. Cartwright.

I’ll leave my thoughts about the horrendous way he was selected for later. It’s unsurprising, after all, given the disregard for the public in Tallahassee during the last couple of decades. First, the Expressway Authority, then GOAA, now the BoT. *sigh*

From Knight News

One serious question I have apart from the kangaroo court selection process: Cartwright lasted less than three years at Mizzou. What makes us believe we won’t have to do this all over again before we reach the midpoint of the decade?

It appears legislative idiot Randy Fine, who proposed such nonsense as shutting down UCF in the wake of Trevorgate, trying to keep UCF Athletics budgets from growing because he doesn’t like proposed lawful sponsors (while ignoring naming problems at other state schools) and merging colleges hundreds of miles apart without bothering to even consult any of the affected institutions, has a Republican primary opponent:

https://ucf.forums.rivals.com/threads/lets-take-down-randy-fine.82724/

Rep. Fine has other issues such as whether he actually resides in his district (a requirement) along with other skeletons in his closet that make him hardly a stalwart of integrity. Yes, I’d prefer a Democrat in the seat but the nature of Brevard politics is a heavy tilt to the right.

Sooo... consider a vote for Ms. Adkins if you live in the district or mention her to friends on the coast who do. You may also think about a campaign contribution. I know I am as the incumbent is an a**hat who simply has to go.

Thad and Katie Seymour came to UCF when things couldn’t have been much more of a mess. Although Thad was just the interim president, from day one he took charge and led the institution. Amazingly, however, he and Katie did it all with a smile and went out of their way to be a part of all our traditions.

We couldn’t have asked for anyone to help us Charge On! with more success and caring in such a short time.

As they enter their last week before Dr. Cartwright arrives, here’s wishing them an incredibly happy retirement .
