tennis32801
If you assume 8 blocks per sq mile, then the number of workers and residents per city block is 1. Miami 11,993 ppl/block 2. Tampa 7,784, 18.8 bars/block 3. Orlando 4,652, 9.6 bars/block 4. Jax 1,922, 3.4 bars/block Jacksonville area (and Tampa to much less extent), has water bodies that affected the calculation

spenser1058
An interesting discussion in The Jaxson about historic preservation at the local level and how effective various strategies are across the country. Downtown Orlando’s historic district gets a nod, but as we know from the demolition of the Jaymont block and Tinker Field, the designation is often toothless. https://www.thejaxsonmag.com/article/historic-preservation-advocacy-lacking-in-jacksonville/ Edited January 6, 2019 by spenser1058

spenser1058
Something I can’t figure out - if you scroll down in this article about Sears there’s a pic of a store in White Plains that’s a lot more interesting than the generic big boxes we have. I’ve also seen photos of Targets and even JCPenneys in other retail stories with stores whose architecture runs circles around anything we ever get. The irony is that we have had many fewer store closures than other areas around the country and individual units here do very well relatively speaking. https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/2667949002 From USA Today
spenser1058
The LA Rams/Chargers are building a $5 billion stadium complex 3 1/2 times the size of Disneyland but without taxpayer support. spenser1058
It has begun - Italy, Europe’s 4th largest economy, has slipped into recession. Depending on what happens with Brexit between now and the end of March, the rest of Europe may well follow suit (the UK and Germany are already slowing down). China is also slowing down thanks in part to the trade war and, here at home, some regions like the agricultural midwest are seeing effects from tariffs. Orlando has escaped the brunt of recessions before when infrastructure growth kept the coffers full. Hopefully, that will be the case this time with so many new projects coming on line in the next 30 months or so. Stay tuned... https://amp.businessinsider.com/italy-economy-officially-in-recession-data-shows-02-contraction-2019-1 From Business Insider Edited January 31, 2019 by spenser1058

Obviously, they aren't now. The locals have been prepped for years on it. A lot of people hate it. A lot of people love it. But in the end, like almost every other painful transportation project, they will fade into the rearview mirror as time passes and it just becomes how it is.

Will be interesting to see how Disney handles the onslaught of crowds heading to DHS — seems almost impossible to relegate the masses in such a small park with few attractions.
