That has always been my point on BL of the privatization ascpect cordons off the profits to the "related" shell company businesses adjacent.

I don't know. The state may eventually have to rescue the rail portion, but it would not be much different than subsidizing road building, so is it all that bad? At least it will get built.

Socialize losses.

Privatize profits. That’s a huge reason we pay more for infrastructure than other developed countries. And we just slough it off as a cost of doing business.

Of course, now we do it in healthcare, education vouchers, student loans, utilities, the list goes on. All in support of the ideology of one side of the aisle.

I know facts don't matter to you, but 1) BL has not "socialized" any losses thus far, 2) socializing losses in healthcare was a big part of the Obamacare plan, 3) education vouchers consistantly save the taxpayers money, they're for less then the public schools spend on them, 4) student loans were again a democrat policy, 5) democrats are again proposing way more subsidies for utilities then the republicans ever did while in power. The socialize losses philosophy is clearly on the democrat side of the isle.

That is not the reason our infrastructure is so expensive compared to  the rest of the western world. It is a combination of legal/ administrative cost and that it takes us forever to get a project approved due to citizen opposition.

Padding profits is a HUGE reason for it. Start right here at home with Duke Energy vs. OUC. Which has the lower prices, reliability of service and turns over the “profits” to local governments to keep municipal budgets balanced instead of sending it off to wealthy shareholders? We’ll move on to Big Pharma and the Student Loan debacle after that and keep on going.

Nevertheless, don’t ask me. Go back to the father of the interstate system, Dwight Eisenhower, and the conclusions he reached about how to build the largest infrastructure project ever conceived. He knew the “military-industrial complex” wasn’t just about weaponry. Did I mention he was a Republican?

Obamacare was built on a framework that a conservative Republican thinktank called The Heritage Foundation and the GOP  championed in the 90's, as their alternative to what they derisively termed 'Hillarycare'.  The entire Republican Party from Newt Gingrich and Trent Lott on down championed the model, which was based on the now hated individual mandate, until a Democrat President named Barack Obama co-opted it and pushed it through Congress.

Florida charter schools are not even required to meet the same minimum standards as Florida public schools in most cases. We won’t even talk about how they are free to discriminate against many students, including disabled and LGBTQ+ and still receive tax dollars.

No, public infrastructure in the US compared to public infrastructure in Europe and Asia. It is not even close. Our subway lines dwarf most of Europe and asian in the cost per mile. Same with highways. It has nothing to do with utility providers that are privately owned. Our country sucks at building  infrastructure for a reasonable price.

Former Windermere mayor Gene Spears has died. He was incredibly active in Rotary but I’ll always remember the Spears family because they, like my dad, grew up in Pull Tight, an old WG neighborhood. He graduated a year behind my dad at Lakeview.

My condolences to his many friends and the family.

@orange87, you’ve gotten quiet since you moved back to Connecticut. Tell us a story!

I still absolutely follow what goes on in Florida. I might eventually buy a vacation home there in a few years. The last three months has been an ENORMOUS time of change for me and my family. Both for good and bad reasons, but overwhelming for good reasons. It almost feels surreal how much we've accomplished recently. I am so happy. I don't have any plans to leave this forum. Truth be told, Orlando development (as you know) has been a bit slow(er) recently so there hasn't been as much to say. I am very excited about that 28 story tower that's currently under construction. Hopefully something else exciting pops up soon like that second tower near Suntrust.

FPL takes down the last 500’ stack on its last Florida coal plant. Perhaps most fitting is that it’s just up the road from Mar-A-Lago in Indiantown.

Now, if we can just get Stanton converted…

There's no good reason to use coal as an energy source in America anymore. Literally ANYTHING is cleaner than coal, and technology has advanced enough to where the alternatives are cost effective now.
