I know we complain about the relatively uninspired design of our newer buildings on here from time to time, but how lucky are we that Vanderbilt built something like this? It already looks like it’s been there a long time now that the crane has come down.

I couldn't agree more.  I just think it's so silly when someone implies that we as a society somehow 'cant' build things like this anymore, as if we've collectively forgotten what stone masonry is or how to do it.  Nah... it's just a matter of will to put in the extra time and work... and, okay, money too.  But like you said, it's so nice to see that there are still entities out there who are willing to make that extra effort to give us all a structure to be proud of.

And, one has to wonder if Vanderbilt can pull it off with a dorm, why can't a developer in downtown?  Just imagine the impact a similar building would have in downtown as a 30-40 story office or residential building.

Oddly…those buildings look 100% better without the windows.   Actually looks like a brand new building.

Tuition is essentially a guaranteed revenue stream versus the rentable square footage. Especially since schools seemingly always increase their tuition year over year. I'm all about holding developers feet to the fire for better design, but developers just don't have the level of guarantees that universities have.

Not to mention overall cost of attendance.

To provide some clarity, the average student cost to attend Vanderbilt is only around $20k due to opportunity Vanderbilt. That program and all of these buildings are funded exclusively by the last two decades of extremely generous alumni giving fueled  by a fairly aggressive outreach by the University. Also, no shareholders nor traditional profit margins at stake, it's all about building the brand of the University.
