Our Knights are #21 in the AP Preseason Poll. The Gators are #8 and, as usual, the ‘Noles, Da U and those poor Cows are out to lunch. Power6 indeed!

Well folks, the Apocalypse May be nigh. Saturday Down South, which has traditionally been right up there on the wall with Paul Finebaum shouting that only the SEC matters, is suggesting, sort of, that an AAC team, theoretically, could now make the CFP. Who knew?

TheAthletic.com previewed the AAC today and gave UCF top rank, narrowly beating Cincy and Memphis. They said QB Gabriel "should be one of the best in the country after finishing in the top 15 nationally in yards per attempt, yards per completion and passing efficiency as a true freshman, and he brings back most of the weapons around him."

Our Knights are ranked #18 this week in ESPN’s Power Rankings:

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29817665/college-football-power-rankings-week-1

It notes we’d be even higher but 10 players including top tier stars Tre Gowan and backup QB Darriel Mack, Jr. took a pass on the season due to COVID last week.

Many thanks also to the B1G and PAC-12 opting out. @HankStrong and @AndyPok1 can ponder Cincinnati being the best team in Ohio this year...

Meanwhile, @spenser1058 will think about which he prefers: a stroll through Cincy’s Over-the-Rhine ‘hood or Columbus’ Short North.

Oh dear. I haven’t been to Ohio in ages.

That's evident from both of your statements.  OTR is insanely hot (pre-COVID) for craft beer and Short North has some of the most insane food you'll eat in the area.

Late 80s/Early 90s OTR especially.  You couldn't have paid me to be anywhere from let's say Short Vine down to Central Parkway after dark.  Back then I went to Washington Park after a matinee show at Music Hall and saw a small group of people passed out with needles in their arms in broad daylight.  Today it's a puppy park and hipster paradise.

I knew OTR had come a ways - back when we were working on downtown Orlando I took a trip up there to benchmark with them, along with some folks from Riverside/Avondale Pres in Jax. At the time, they had a lot more raw material to work with but some of it was a lot further gone. The after pics were telling. That’s why I chuckle when anyone here tells me anything on Orange Ave. wasn’t worth saving - they have no idea what’s possible.

As to Short North, a friend of mine from Nashville moved up there to work in a gallery and, last I heard, was happy as a clam. Of course, she never loathed cold weather like I do.

The Gators may be an, ummmm, dumpster fire so far but the AP gives The Swamp’s conflagration a #5 ranking this week.

Meanwhile, our Knights place at #14.

Meanwhile, the coaches have UF at #6 and bumped up our Hometown National Champions to #13.

It’s an interesting time to note some perspective. Both the ‘Noles and Da U have been playing a lot longer than UCF and receive a lot more money as P5 schools than the Knights. Nevertheless, they’ve been trailing our lads in the polls for several seasons now and are scared to death to play us.

Let’s face it - Florida is now the Big Two.

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, not much of a UCF fan recently, nevertheless placed our Knights at #14 in his most recent Power Rankings.

I also have to chuckle at all the P5 apologists who’ve been insisting we need to join the Big 12 (like all that’s required is to knock on the door and ask, but I digress).

I’ve maintained all along that instead of begging to be a part of a poorly conceived, arrogant yet overrated conference in a system that is on its last throes of relevance and won’t be around much longer in its current form after the 2025 contracts come up because ESPN isn’t about to keep carrying the teams that aren’t pulling their weight even if they’ve been around for 100 years.

Dana Holgorsen knew exactly what he was doing when he quit the Big 12’s WVU for the AAC’s Houston berth.

Anyway, when the chips are down, you show what you’re made of. How did the vaunted Big 12 do? 0-3 against the, ahem, Sun Belt Conference.

Power 5? Right.

A couple of things from this postmortem on yesterday’s games by CBS Sports. First, the columnist, who didn’t pick our Knights to win the AAC, is now convinced. Thanks!

And then there’s Da U. Miami has as many “they’re back” stories as Texas - both usually go splat by the third game of the season. Moreover, last year’s meme for UM started with the same win over Louisville after which the ‘Canes promptly went nowhere.

Nevertheless, if this is finally the year of their comeback, should we note it’s in the hands of a QB they imported from the AAC?

Pfffft5.

Also, a great tribute in the AJC  to the impact Coach George O’Leary has had on both the Jackets and UCF (Tech’s current coach, Geoff Collins, is leading a great turnaround at GT and was originally hired by Coach O as a GA in Atlanta).

Coach O’Leary will always have an asterisk following his name at UCF for his role in the death of a player at practice. He also turned the keys over to his protege Brent Key that led to the infamous 2015 0-12 season (interestingly, Coach Key is now OC for the Jackets).

Nevertheless, just as Steve Spurrier’s squeaky-clean (a concept totally beyond Urban Liar) triumph at Florida was made possible thanks to the foundation laid by Charley Pell’s skullduggery, what Danny White, Coaches Frost and Heup have done at UCF stands atop the work of Coach O’Leary.
