Google Says It's Achieved Quantum Supremacy, a World-First: Report

https://gizmodo.com/google-says-its-achieved-quantum-supremacy-a-world-fir-1838299829

Not really specific to Charlotte, but with Blockchain exploding/growing , 5G reality and this breakthrough,  AI and Automation will be accelerating VERY rapidly now. This is good news for Charlotte's tech workers and should only accelerate the tech numbers.

We heard about that move, yet we keep hearing of building new buildings in Ballantyne and the retrofit of CIC on Harris Blvd.  In my opinion, they are going to expand there - not uptown.  Everything that we have been told, especially when we were moved to Ballantyne is that this started in the Wachovia years and there was a directive to move as many to the suburbs as possible.  With all of the problems my company has been part of over the past several years, they are looking to save money and cut costs EVERYWHERE.  Real estate and head count are the biggest areas to start with.  I have said it before, regardless of how increasingly worse traffic is getting to Uptown, I would give my right arm to be back there.

If you think the last ~20 years of the internet have been reality-shifting the next 20 are going to be even more so.

I still think AIG may announce a major expansion at some point.

They might expand in Uptown (and have quietly for the past 18 months) but they will always be a NYC-HQ/Intl-looking company barring a massive shakeup.

Current expansion has been in their current space - doubt they would build a tower with their current focus on reducing expenses.

"Charlotte has rapidly becoming known as a tech hub, with giants like PayPal and Lowes calling the city home."

Should someone tell them about PayPal? :tw_anguished:

I saw that and since they released their own press release about their new office.  someone give me their new office location and I will rush over 3 dozen of  Charlotte based Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

wow you are right more than any city they operate in worldwide but London and NYC.  Something is afoot here and maybe this is one of the mystery econ development projects out there.

I have heard through the grapevine that Moody's is opening an office in WeWork (Assume the uptown location but not 100%) on Monday for 200-250 staff members.

You are correct and there are already 37 people working there at the First Citizens Bank location.

49 working for Better.com at the Railyard location as well.

45 for MUFG Union Bank another growing fintech operation.  They are at Regions location.

WeWork and other coworking spaces are a great way to get an office opened immediately while you wait on the build out of a permanent office.  So many companies are doing this around the country now.

Charlotte named as the Best city for software engineers to buy a home that despite high salaries are unobtainable in the Bay area and increasingly Seattle.  I have met personally quite a few tech people from Northern VA DC area that have moved here for the same reasons.

Update on employee levels of a couple tech offices here

Moody's Investor Services   57   projected 140

Better.com   58 projected 1000 in a few years

MUFG Union Bank   71  size unknown

all are growing fast here in Charlotte.

Better.com is a mortgage company more than a tech company. All of their positions in Charlotte are underwriters, loan processors, sales associates, and call center employees. Zero jobs in software development or tech so far.

another aspect of tech growth in Charlotte is energy tech and here is a good story about it which resulted in an UK company relocating to Charlotte.

as for Passport mentioned above that makes 3 full floors in First Citizens Bank bldg. for them.

Here is the information on ZapGo that relocated from Oxford England
