Part of the reason they agreed to this is community opposition. While they actually have the authority to condemn property and build this sort of thing over objections (after an environmental impact study, I believe) they do not generally like to do this. But the other part of this is that it frees up a big portion of the lot for them to sell off and develop. They bought a property on a prominent corner that was about the right size for a conventional substation, but property values around there are high enough that they can recover a significant chunk of the extra construction cost by selling off the land.

 

The reason I bring this up is that, while Duke will be in no hurry to replace a substation before its equipment reaches end of life, once the equipment does come up for replacement, I'd bet that this approach could be on the table for a location like this. That is, if the Asheville project goes well for them. If Asheville is any indication, community involvement will be key.

I'm surprised the Panthers haven't lobbied for this by now..

Had to work uptown today.  I noticed this angle as I was on the 2nd floor of the old Energy Center building.   Kinda neat to see it peaking over the Mint Street Parking Deck.

One more parking floor, and then the L shaped tower will rise.

I’m legit more excited for this tower than any other. It is bringing real height to the city that is further off the Trade / Tryon axis than any other building in the city except for The Vue (and really this one is a half block farther out as it sits on the back side of the block towards Graham  )

Real quick question. How did the Vue get approved in 4th Ward in the first  place? A modern residential skyscraper in the middle of an historic Victorian neighborhood?

I remember going to the Friends of Fourth Ward meeting back when the developers of the Vue were trying to sell it to the neighborhood.  There were some very vocal folks that are the more neighborhood stalwart types, so to speak, and they were all for it.  They loved how it spread the skyline out and felt it was more appropriate for lots as they got closer to Trade, on the outer edges of the historical feeling part.   And they supported the added density to fuel development we could all take advantage of.  There wasn’t a lot, if any, opposition that I remember.  And their renderings had the two spires that didn’t make it...  sad.  Anyway, it ended up getting FOFW’s blessing.

Ok so I really don’t want to hijack a thread, but there’s nothing going on here for a minute so...  Here’s the only rendering I can find that has the spires.  It’s like they went back and scrubbed the internet.  These were supposed to be on top, but got VE’d when they lost their financing about 3/4 of the way through construction in ‘08.  Then, if I recall correctly, some company from Chicago swooped in and bought it out and finished it as apartments after it sat for a while.  It was started as condo.   Something like that.

I suspect that this will be topped out by this time next year (Dec 2020) if its Concrete Construction or even earlier if it’s Structural Steel.  I believe the building  interior finishes and opening is scheduled for completion sometime in early 2021.

from various points and vantage points the forgotten corner of Charlotte Rising.  I heard on the street someone ask what the building was out loud and of course I told them. The other person thought just a parking garage.

the forgotten corner of uptown no longer.  FNB Tower rising today.  Boy is there a lot of cranes over that way in Third Ward. I think these apartments will have the best views of uptown even better than the taller Vue due to its location and angling into the heart of the skyline.

from a couple angles today this is really starting to rise.  The forgotten corner of Charlotte Rising.

I found where Homer the Dragon lives right across from BB&T Ballpark
