The Space Coast is on a tear JOBS-wise (who says we never talk about those?) The latest is 2000 call center spots available on Merritt Island and in Melbourne.

Did you know there were once plans for a Holly Hill bridge?

I never really thought about needing a bridge up there (of course I never had to deal with traffic on Granada, either, as I rarely went that far north.)

To me, what seemed weird to be bridgeless was Beville Rd (which is FL 400 connecting back to the start of I4.) It just unceremoniously dead ends at US1 with all that I4 traffic.

It's also odd there's no bridge over Ponce Inlet, forcing a drive north several miles to get to the Port Orange bridge. Of course, I'm guessing the NIMBYs would go wild down by the lighthouse.

Anyway, an interesting tale of the bridge that never was:

I know that back in the '80's there was a lot of opposition to it from people living on the beachside.  the plan was to link it with Plaza Ave on one side.   I know 3 judges that lived near where the bridge would've connected...

The Ocean Walk 10 theater near Daytona's Broadwalk has closed and will reopen soon after renovations.

Apparently, Cobb's new One Daytona complex attracted local moviegoers away from the beachside, resulting in lower attendance.

Cobb is stiff competition, for sure.  I wondered whether it would have an impact...it did.

But seriously, East Volusia has 250k residents more or less.  That population base can't support two major cinemas with a total of maybe 24 screens between the two of them?

Space Coast makes me fondly remember pre-binge watching days of staying home in the winter from school and catching all the shenanigans of Jeanie, Major Nelson, and Major Healy.

insert lascivious comments about Jeanie here:  "________________________" (I censored myself)

They probably can. My guess (and it's only that because I haven't been to One Daytona and it's been years since I went to OW10) is that One Daytona had all the buzz, Cobb really does offer a great product and Ocean Walk may have let things slide (hey, it's just tourists - we'll never see them again.)

I'd also guess it has to do with the habit of residents to avoid the beachside like the plague. A fascinating phenomenon I've never quite understood (one that's being borne out as we speak by most of Daytona's growth happening in the middle of nowhere - can you imagine Orlando if the restoration of our downtown neighborhoods never happened?)

It all gets back to Daytona being locked into a 1970s mentality. Until that changes, we'll probably see more of that.

This is a first: a new Hyatt Place near KSC complete with a launch viewing lounge. Thanks to all the private firms that have sprung up along with NASA and CCAFS activity, guests will be more likely to see a launch than ever before. It's definitely anew day in Space Coast tourism.

A new hotel coming near Kennedy Space Center will have a rocket launch viewing lounge

they should have a large hotel at Port Canaveral for passengers coming in early instead of the day of.  Don't ya think that would work?

The Chick-Fil-A VAB? The Morgan & Morgan Orbiter (For the Martians")?

Trump's NASA is pondering sponsorships:

Could rockets be billboards and astronauts star in commercials? NASA is considering it.

so, I've seen international bank ads/ logos on airport gate gantries recently; there's one at MIA for example. Yeah, why not?  Bezos and company are self marketing their own empires with their respective rockets...

The growth in the Daytona area continues especially in the LPGA area. Two new Unicorp developments along LPGA at Williamson and Clyde Morris. A 37 acre shopping center and a 101 acre residential area with 233 homes and 340 apartments. They plan to break ground Q119 with storefronts and some houses open by early 2020.

It is truly amazing what is happening along LPGA from 92 to Nova.

And Consolidated-Tomoka continues to cash out of properties.

With regard to Daytona, the LPGA area around i-95 (Tanger Outlets and Buffett-town) is doing nothing to eliminate the plight found in (what loosely passes for) the core.  Development can be good, neutral or bad.  When you're knocking down trees, while fleeing excessively paved grid of strip plazas and payday loaners, it's the antithesis of urban.  aka bad.

They’re not really knocking down trees.  Those are pretty much large swaths of flatlands and always have been.
