There is a high-rise apartment building under construction as well.

Is it a new one or is it one of the old ones that's had some issues, being renovated?

I've never really spent any time in downtown Melbourne, though I've driven through it on a number of occasions years and years ago.

I recall it as being a dead, depressing wasteland, though I've heard talk of some nightlife and activity happening there in recent years.

Maybe they're on the verge of getting an actual downtown there now.

Here's a short video from about a year ago...

Looks like quite a bit of renovation has happened since I was last there.

From what I see here, I can imagine some decent crowds out on a weekend night.

Florida Tech (FIT - Melbourne) has decided to end its football program in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was to be their seventh season. They competed in Division II. I confess I didn’t know FIT even had.a football team. I supposed I was too overwhelmed by Stetson’s program (which I wonder if they’re planning to keep).

Historians will look back on this as The Great Hysteria.

A major renovation of a 1965 “Right Stuff” era motel in Cocoa Beach is making quite a splash:

From the Orlando Weekly

Next up: a refurbishment of another Brevard gem from those days - @JFW657 !

I could use a good refurb.   :ermm:

Maybe send me out to Las Vegas to see if Rick Dale & Co. can do anything for me.

Re: the hotel, I remember that place. A guy (named Guy) who I knew since my late teens grew up in CB and I think he, his mom and his sister lived there for a little while.

Sounds pretty cool.  :shades:

This week, the Space Coast will be the site of a manned launch for the first time in almost a decade. For the first time, however, it will be a private company, SpaceX, doing the honors.

Space travel is a unique competence of the Central Florida economy. These jobs pay well and by spreading the activity out to private firms as well as NASA should reduce some of the volatility of funding. It bodes well for Brevard and the entire region.

Heaven knows it couldn’t come at a better time to, ummm, relaunch our local economy.

This is going to take some getting used to - following the successful manned flight to the ISS, SpaceX is already scheduled for a launch of internet satellites today from CCAFS Pad 40.

This really is going to be an amazing business for the Space Coast.

Unfortunately, it's not.  The design stands in pretty stark contrast to the surroundings.  It reminds me a bit of those University of Tampa dorms built about a decade ago.

And, a night launch - the views should be much improved from Orlando over the Saturday day launch.

YETYO.

Personally, I think it looks pretty decent, especially for downtown Melbourne where TBH, pretty much anything is an improvement.

I recall the place being a dead, barren, depressing wasteland, so something like this is a vast improvement.
