SpaceX’s planned LC-49 at KSC, which would add new facilities for launches of its  Starship rockets, is coming under scrutiny for environmental concerns and access to the southern part of Playalinda Beach:

This one hurts. Ever since Norwood’s went upscale and stopped serving fish and grits in the morning, whenever we were in NSB, Little Drug’s where we’d go for breakfast.

They’ve been on Canal St. downtown since God was a child and will definitely be missed.

DeBary is slowly but surely pushing out all the country bumpkins and the businesses that cater to them. There's at least two rinky-dink used car dealerships on the main road that goes through DeBary (S Charles Richard Beall Blvd). They're going to be grandfathered in and allowed to stay open, but no other ones will be allowed to open.

...first it's the rinky dink car dealerships; then it's gonna be the strip clubs...then what are we supposed to do?

You're supposed to get a latte and gluten-free breakfast panini at the local coffee shop. Then you're supposed to walk over to the Performing Arts Center to wallow in guilt as you view an exhibit on racial justice.

So glad Bucee's has come to Florida and here is the one in Daytona Beach.  Don't call it a gas station or convenience store as it is the size of an average Publix.  It is a destination!   Plus there is one up in St Augustine too and one planned I think for Fort Myers.

Heading to Orlando after a stint in Palm Beach County.

I haven't been to the one in St. Aug yet.  That one has the retail building sandwiched between the two fueling bays so it probably has entrances on both sides.  Up north, I went to a Meijer's supercenter that had entrances and registers on two sides.  it was very cool.

Usually Bucees has a main entrance facing the gas pumps and 2 side entrances on each side with cashiers there too.  Bathrooms which are legendary and award winning in the middle near the fresh food which is very good.  I could see a couple more of these and maybe one on I-4 between Disney and Tampa area.

...you cannot put a price tag on how important an award winning bathroom is when making a pitstop...

Meanwhile, the folks in DeBary are green with envy cuz the (DeLightful!) DeLand art museum is exhibiting paintings by John Mellencamp.

No word if DeLand will soon be awash in Little Pink Houses…

Did he drop the "Cougar" in his name after the reference to older women banging younger men became a thing?

Don’t know the whole story but supposedly once he made the big time he decided he could go by his real last name. It’s fascinating all the stuff he’s dabbled in.

Meanwhile John Denver steered clear of Deutschendorf but then he and his father didn’t get along.

He didn't drop it all at once.

In the late 70's - early 80's when he first came on the scene, he was known as Johnny Cougar.

Apparently someone at his record company talked him into it. Later on, he changed Johnny to John, kept the Cougar and added the Mellencamp. My guess the reason why he didn't immediately drop the Cougar was because he didn't want to suddenly abandon the name recognition.

After everyone began to associate John Cougar Mellencamp with the former Johnny Cougar, I guess he felt it was safe to drop the Cougar.

At any rate, he is rumored to be a major league a-hole.

Good proposal that Marriott.  I recall the DBS council voting to have the Treasure Island razed a while back.

On the development note, that beachside apartment building along A1A that broke ground last year, near Americano...they are now finally putting in the blue tower crane(s).

An interesting discussion on whether Daytona Beach’s Ocean Center should be expanded:

https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/local/volusia/2022/02/05/daytona-beach-ocean-center-convention-events-expansion-volusia/9291675002/

It’s nice to see work on whether expansion actually makes sense rather than “it’s our money, dadgumit, we’ll waste it however we please” as we’ve seen in another Central Florida county.

If you’ve been around Orlando long enough to know that most of the FFO’s (and anyone with the means, like my parents,  to afford a small condo - ours was at Point East down near the 27th Ave ramp) considered NSB “the locals’ beach”.

In those days, one of the few dressier places to do dinner was The Skyline at the NSB airport.

Scott J takes a retro look at a blast from the past:
