eminent domain for another private project...am I missing something here? sounds like you can't do that.

Kelo vs New London. I am pretty sure the state of Florida banned eminent domain for private purpose after that case. One of the worst decisions in the 20th century. The Supreme Court ruled you can use eminent domain for a private purpose if economic development was the main purpose for it. The worse part is the company never built the headquarters.

A tour of Titusville’s other dead mall (Miracle City Mall was the first even though it was built a couple of years later), Searstown:

https://www.thejaxsonmag.com/article/dead-malls-searstown-mall

From The Jaxson

The name was changed to Titusville Mall after Sears left, but it’s still just as dead…

Ironically, Titusville is growing again as the space program is livelier than ever.

there's a guy on YT that tours dead malls around the country.

This mall looks pretty cool- in that, if you have the type of stores there that would otherwise go there.

This is a good idea not only for bringing downtown back and highlighting one of the most historic venues in baseball, but also to assist B-CU  as well.

“HOLLY HILL — After donating over $8 million to build and expand the city-owned Pictona pickleball complex here, Rainer and Julie Martens are partnering with a Holly Hill business owner to create a place for visiting players to stay.

”The $7 million project will create a 25-acre campground a mile north of Pictona at 490 Flomich St. It will offer 90 pads with utility hook-ups for recreational vehicles, 10 primitive campsites and a pavilion that includes a clubhouse with shower and laundry facilities, a convenience store and pool. Rental rates for overnight stays have yet to be determined. Holly Hill RV Resort will also offer a 10-acre lake, bike trails, and golf cart, kayak and paddleboard rentals.”

As a follow up to the bad Lake Nona jobs announcement... Florida loses satellite factory project with thousands of jobs to California

Per OBJ, "Terran Orbital Corp. has scrapped plans for the $300 million satellite production facility it planned to build on Florida's Space Coast, which the Boca Raton-based company instead will build in California."... "would have brought 2,100 high-wage jobs and millions of dollars in construction and development to the region."

https://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/news/2022/10/31/florida-2022-jobs-tech-california-factory-lockheed.html?cx_testId=40&cx_testVariant=cx_11&cx_artPos=1#cxrecs_s

That kinda sucks.

"Terran Orbital will use the Lockheed money to buy more satellite assembly space, and the advanced manufacturing facility it planned to open in Melbourne now will be based in Irvine, California,"

The historic Plaza Resort and Spa is closing for up to 18 months to make repairs caused by Ian:

https://www.news-journalonline.com/story/news/local/2022/11/01/daytona-plaza-resort-and-spa-close-hurricane-ian-storm-repairs/10625663002/

From The News Journal

they were selling condo units that had unpaid assessments attached to the price prior to Ian (condo's for around $100k with assessments of $20k average)...so...I'd hate to see what damages Ian caused that insurance doesn't cover...really stinks...

A huge encroachment on the Palmetto Curtain in Edgewater and in Daytona an interesting downtown project has been downgraded to just apartments:

“The permitting process continued for two big projects. Miami Corp. is seeking environmental resource permits from the St. Johns River Water Management District for Deering Park Center, which could have up to 1,712 residential units and about 500,000 square feet of non-residential uses on the west side of Interstate 95 at Edgewater.

“Westplan Investors of Atlanta is seeking site plan approval from the City of Daytona Beach for the 250-unit Accent Daytona apartments, covering the unbuilt area bounded by Bay Street, Palmetto and Ridgewood avenues, and West International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach. The former Delta project, which would have included apartments, a parking building, a grocery store and other retail/office buildings, will now be covered by apartments and surface parking areas. Popeye's and an office building fronting Ridgewood will remain.”

At least @jrs2 will still have his Popeye’s!

Canaveral Nat’l Seashore, Playalinda Beach smashed by Hurricane Nicole are ‘not going to be the same’
https://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/environment/os-ne-canaveral-seashore-future-unknown-20221221-tptv7zespfgehmpxjhefhwrhli-htmlstory.html

From The Sentinel

Only five of the fourteen access and parking areas at Playalinda remain intact after Hurricane Nicole. The National Park Service is trying to determine how to move forward. Thanks to climate change, it will require rethinking the area as higher sea levels are expected to become the norm.

There is also pressure from NASA to expand launch facilities at nearby KSC into areas currently protected.

I know it’s shocking, but you can “just say no” to overdevelopment:

New Smyrna Beach’s thoughtful pause is a contrast to other storm-ravaged towns rebuilding as fast as they can.

Could Mount Dora be getting a skyline????  :o

Say it ain't so!!!! :(

Plans are being laid near quaint, bucolic downtown Mount Dora for something called The Wolf Branch Innovation District.

Apparently this is something that has been in the works for some years now..

It could consist of eight planned high rises, one of which could be up to 310', a convention center and other mixed use spaces....

Looks like even Mount Dora is destined to become just another Central Florida paradise lost.

that is very interesting.  it is north of Rennigers and on 441, away from their downtown, yet near the new interchange to get you to Wekiva Pkwy.  I don't really see a down side to them building all that there...and there's a Publix to the south on 441 not to far from there already...

Unless you consider all the spin off development it will spur.

New strip malls, shopping centers, gas stations, mini-marts, fast food restaurants, new single family tract home neighborhoods, increased traffic, noise, pollution, garbage disposal, natural resource usage, etc, etc, etc.

To me it sounds like the beginning of what I said earlier... another Florida paradise lost.

Gah!  That's across the street from my mountain bike park!  With the Apopka Town Center already starting construction I quite like Mt Dora being what it is now and agree, it would be a shame to lose it.

Anyone else see these renderings and get the vibe of the Lexington Towers from 15 years ago?

2.8m sq ft at 5 levels.  it's about a 600k sq ft floor plate x 5.

It is literally on airport property just to the south of the main runway and to the east of Williamson.  I saw the construction lights on it last night and thought the Speedway (DIS, not the gas station), was rebuilding the south stands again.  I was wrong; it was this instead.
