Cool Stuff in Other Cities

This may not be "cool stuff", but... American Airlines is out of their contract for naming rights of the Heat arena. Guess who has submitted a proposal for naming rights...

Even small towns can have tall buildings - rejoice, all you vertical folk!

Mobile has the tall and beautiful Battle House RSA Tower tallest building between Houston and Tampa on the gulf coast.  Taller than anything in New Orleans.

WE WANT TALL!

I have been in the mall in Kópavogur, Iceland's tall building.  It was neat.

I mean, wait,  because I'm on this forum I'm a dumb Orlando hillbilly that has never left Florida and doesn't own a passport.  Nevermind.  I always forget that.  :)

Iceland doesn’t count - Greenland is the place - soon to be our 51st state!

While we’re pondering over the new Dollar General next door to the University Club, Boston has a new project featuring a two-story grocery store on the site of the old Boston Garden underway:

We don't need this in Orlando with all the empty lots, but thought this was a pretty cool design for somewhere that space is at a premium:

The timing you posted this is uncanny... I'm visiting family in Toronto now (and I'm a also fan of Kirsten's channel). The home in this video was listed for $ 2,999,000 (CAD). Homes that are updated & in move-in ready condition can sell over the asking price, but real estate sales prices aren't made public in Ontario (yet) so I can't see how much it actually sold for. While the interior is nice, the exterior is quite ugly IMO. And no windows on the sides or on the upper level/bathroom area, really??

Homes near downtown are expensive and the people who buy these sturdy old brick homes sometimes tear them down to build bigger. Homes that we would consider historic in Orlando are not considered "old enough" to be protected and are being torn down to build gaudy mcmansions that are incongruent with neighboring architecture and with questionable durability (brick cladding over plywood).

Will Tampa replace Orlando as Florida’s  new Hollywood East?  The Hillsborough County Commission hopes so:

I was looking at this opening from Dragnet in 1969. Compare the shot of downtown LA from the opening of LA Law in the mid - to late- 1980s.

LA was still open space with a lot of mid rise in the ‘60’s but within two decades several talls had been built.

A couple of things to keep in mind, one of the pioneering families of the area, the Chandlers, worked behind the scenes to avoid LA from going vertical. The reason? The family’s extensive land holdings they wanted to sell.

By the 1980’s, the next generation viewed things quite differently (they also turned the LATimes which they owned from a right-wing paper to a progressive one). Also, as we know, the ‘80’s were a period of tall trophy buildings being erected around the country.

Just a look at how changing attitudes drive even our largest cities in different directions. It matters not only in politics but our urban environment, too.

Tampa Bay Rays inched closer to the Post-Season last night with a 12th inning walk-off homerun against the dreaded, division-leading Yankees.  The Rays have won 5 of their last 6 to put themselves into the Wild Card position with 4 games remaining.

The Rays, a young, perpetual underdog team has been finding the old magic again and finding a way to do more with less.  I love cheering for the Rays because it is always like David vs. Goliath. The Rays have the league's 5th lowest payroll and 4th youngest average age, but are in position for the wild card berth in the tough American League East.
