Cool Stuff in Other Cities

Would redevelopment of the Trop site keep the Rays in St. Pete? If not, what else could the city do with the property? Mayor Rick Kriseman seems to be in no hurry and other local leaders want to get started:

What could have been if the Woolworth’s and McCrory’s facades have been saved - building new while saving history in other cities:

Note that all of these are 2-4 stories. I much prefer what we got.

IIRC (because I have never been able to find the rendering) the black & white sketch of the Woolworth/McCrory facade did not look good. Plus it interfered w/the Solaire's ability to create an open plaza. Although I do like a  nice tight streetwall, it gets a bit dark and claustrophobic along that stretch of Orange so the open plaza is like a breath of fresh air IMO.

I'm all for facade preservation if done right. The examples in the article turned out nicely. But other times... not so much. In Toronto, we have a condo tower that incorporated the Royal Canadian Military Institute (a historic military museum/library etc.) into the facade. Riverwalk Place in Tampa, which would be the Florida Gulf Coast’s highest tower at over 50 stories, is going through yet another shuffle before ever going vertical.

Originally on a site planned as a Trump Tower, the planned condo development is undergoing an ownership change and being redesigned to include a high-end hotel. Deposits are being returned.

As we know, the idea of including a hotel is often developerspeak for “let’s throw this at the wall and see what sticks” and with a nascent COVID-19 recession possibly aborning, don’t hold your breath on this one for the moment.

I watch reruns of the show American Restoration every afternoon from 1 till 2 on (the ota broadcast channel) Quest. Formerly a cable show.

They restore a lot f classic Americana from that era. Old vending machines, gas pumps, amusements, bicycles, go-karts, scooters, and also large neon signs.

The shop is in Las Vegas, so you can imagine some of the signs they get. Some off of those very same style buildings.

It's pretty cool if you've never seen it.

I occasionally check out the EarthCam website to view their live streams from various locales.

Thought it would be interesting to have a look at their Times Square cam and see live video during this current crisis.

This is a screen shot of what normally packed to the rafters Times Square looked like at 9 pm....

Looks like Dodge City at high noon....

Interesting perspective from a Republican mayor in a very red state on how to handle COVID-19.

From the New York Times

It’s also interesting to see that Tulsa (the city is 1/3 larger than Orlando though the MSA is somewhat smaller) elected a mayor at 39 (he even defeated the incumbent!) while we keep electing folks who’ll soon be ready for Social Security. For a young city supposedly open to new people and new ideas, I confess I’m perplexed.

The Orlando and Tampa videos were great! This one ... eh not so much. Don’t know if I blame it on the city of Jacksonville or not.

I think a lot of the problem is that, for its size, Jacksonville is just too darn spread out so that most of what you see on the highway is a lot of trees.

The bridges, the river and the buildings are amazing but there’s just no density to make you think “city”.

OTOH, I spent most of my teenage years in Jax (actually,  I lived in Orange Park, just across I-295 in Clay County). As a result, my idea of “Big River” was the St. Johns, which at OP is a little over 3 miles wide.

A few years later, I crossed the “mighty” Mississippi at Memphis for the first time. While that city’s bluffs at the river were impressive, the actual width of the river was kinda meh based on what I was used to. Another case of Florida being ignored in popular imagination...

Speaking of Florida, the one road in the US that is totally unique to us is A1A. That highway designation is ours and ours alone and runs closer to the Atlantic than any other major road in the state.

Who else to sing about it and give a mention in a song? Florida’s troubadour, Jimmy Buffett, from his album “A1A”:
