Tampa’s Historic Preservation Commission is attempting to save the 1912 Tarr Furniture/Tampa Tribune building from demolition.

Based on how Tampa’s law is written, they’re likely to lose, but props to them for at least trying:

Did you know Ford once had an auto assembly plant in Jacksonville? There are remnants of the huge complex even today, but it appears its days are numbered. The facility hasn’t been used since the ‘70’s.

It is a great example of just how diverse the Jax economy was in its heyday, with everything from film studios to auto plants and cigar factories (it managed to eclipse Tampa on that at one point). Even today, it’s one of Florida’s most diversified economies.

With everything Jax had/ has in its favor, it's amazing how far behind they fell. If Tampa can make the turnaround they've done, I'm hopeful things improve for Jax over the next few decades.

Restoration is underway for the Union Terminal Warehouse in downtown Jacksonville:

I remember in the ‘70’s coming off the Matthews Bridge into downtown and seeing this huge building in decline with hundreds of windows and wondering why no one would fix it. It’s taken almost fifty years, but here we are.

It just shows that saying a building “is too far gone” to restore is often just an excuse for developers to take the cheap way out instead of keeping important parts of a city’s history.

Oh my, this sounds familiar…as Suze Orman points out, unless it’s for a temporary purpose, a self-storage unit means you have too much stuff.

We won’t even talk about the irony of an economy that refuses to build affordable housing but is exploding with self-storage projects.
