That's extremely valuable land on Tryon.  What would be the incentive to not build and get zero revenue from that land?

well I not here to post a starting date on this Moxy Hotel but an update.   From a Biz Journal article on hotels and lodging and the difficulties they face:

""About a year ago, BPR Properties filed paperwork to obtain a building permit for a 208-room Moxy Hotel in uptown Charlotte. It was two weeks away from closing on a loan for the project. The goal was to get the permit approved by May, secure financing, then break ground by July, right before the Republican National Convention, said Birju Patel.  Instead, lockdowns began, debt markets froze and BPR was shuttering hotels and furloughing employees.  And while BPR's 22 hotels have seen a solid rebound since the start of 2021 — even its uptown Embassy Suites is 80% to 90% booked on weekends — the Moxy remains on hold.""

with so much business travel still not happening it will be a slow road to recovery for Charlotte hotels especially uptown.   If you work for a major corporation let us know when your company can travel again.   Average occupancy in early March of this year was 47% vs 68% in 2019.

Also on hold the article states Intercontinental Hotel uptown,  the Courtyard by Marriott in Dilworth, Homewood Suites uptown by Ellis, Hampton Inn Scaleybark station LoSo  the Even Hotel at Stonewall Station (stalled before the pandemic) etc.

Still 28,000 LESS leisure and hospitality jobs in Meck county again 28,000 LESS now than in Feb. 2020.

Hmm I do not about that especially the Moxy and not even sure the high rise Intercontinental could be open in 2022.  Maybe the next year

Yeah they needed to update their information.  Both sites will be fortunate to start construction by the end of 2022.

Has the resumption of the Moxy Hotel project even been confirmed yet?  I think I remember it being on hold due to covid.  Also the above article stated that the JW Marriott was going to open in May 2021.

It is now scheduled to open on August 17th.

Admittedly I know nothing of how hotel development works, but my understanding is a new Moxy hotel (not announced previously) is proposed in Virginia Beach, VA. I have to think if one there is moving forward then the one in Charlotte surely must be. (Speculation on my part)

The Moxy in Virginia Beach is going to be an oceanfront resort hotel. That's a slam dunk as demand for domestic beach vacations is through the roof with COVID with people a little more hesitant to fly / travel internationally. Hotels up and down the Southeast on the water are completely sold out and room rates are outrageous (like $700+ a night for a basic room at a Marriott in Hilton Head).

Contrast that to Uptown Charlotte -> largely business travel Monday - Friday. Business travel demand has NOT rebounded and there is much uncertainty on how much business travel people will do in the next 2 - 3 years. It is still very slow and hotel rooms get a little busier on the weekends in Charlotte, but room rates are still suppressed and nothing like the demand at the beach or the mountains. Leisure is driving hotel demand right now, and we just aren't a major leisure hub, especially for a week long vacation during the work week like the mountains or beach.

I think the Moxy developers didn't realized they accidently proposed a hotel right across from the CTC.  Used Covid as an excuse to back out and rethink things.  (Blue font).  Jokes aside, those lots need to be developed and a hotel would add more foot traffic (safety in numbers type of thing).  Having more bar/restuarant options would be nice too being next to the arena.  I'd imagine this stays stalled/delayed a little bit longer vs the the stonewall hotel and intercontinental.

This block will stay empty for quite a long time until there's movement on both CTC and Epicenter re-use.

This is good news for this area of Uptown.  By the time they finish construction on this hotel (2025) there could finally be some movement on the CTC Redesign and good life at Queen City Corner (Epicenter).
