Burton Heights

All the cool neighborhoods get their own threads, so I figure I'd start one. :-)

The "Garfield Lofts" project is going forward: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jqAJEppSe0KRLkICvlJicWjqZK9n7us_/view . This will involve demolishing the 110-year-old former Burton UMC (100 Burton St SE) and building LIHTC apartments.

Other neighborhood news (that I don't recall being discussed elsewhere): The adult theater building on Division just south of Burton has been purchased, and is being renovated. The ugly facade has been taken off. Not sure if any tenants are lined up yet—it won't be returned to its former use.

One Bun has been operating on Division a block south of Burton for at least six months now. Very good hotdogs (including hand-dipped corn dogs), decently priced. One of the owners was a long-time Yesterdog employee.

One Bun corn dogs are fantastic.

Also, on May 20 at Garfield Park there will be a kick-off celebration for the South Division Corridor Area Specific Plan:

That’s unfortunate. It’s kind of a unique design for this area. But I also get that it’s a good location and chrurches aren’t always easy to redevelop into a new use .

Good to hear!  What's going in that location?  Do they have a tenant?

No idea. Here's the description of the project from the planning application:

Quote

Demolish existing use of adult massage parlor and porn shop, which has been a major eyesore and retail detractor in Burton Heights for decades. Renovate to 5,500 sq ft of mainstream retail at street level and 2,800 square feet of office on second floor. Renovations includes new facade, roof, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, bathrooms, rated separations, and more. We hope to retain some of the historical elements of the building, including re-using the existing original tin ceiling. The end result will be an attractive two story building at the heart of Burton Heights, with the Silver Bus line out front and a large city parking lot in the back, which will be attractive to mainstream retail tenants at street level and small businesses in the second floor office space.

Just stumbled across this SLU request:

https://inspections.grcity.us/CitizenAccess/Cap/CapDetail.aspx?Module=Planning&TabName=Planning&capID1=18CAP&capID2=00000&capID3=00WTZ&agencyCode=GRANDRAPIDS&IsToShowInspection=

Looks like Community Recovery (in the old Garfield Park Reformed Church building, NW corner of Burton and Jefferson) wants to build a new apartment building in their parking lot. Seems like a great use of the space, IMHO.

Also, the former United Methodist church at Burton and Francis will be demolished soon—the demolition permit is in process. That is where the Garfield Lofts project is going.
