I'm hoping I'm wrong, because the first tower is so spectacular--I truly love it--and I just can't conceive how one element can be so right and another be so wrong, when designed all together. 

I have almost no problem with it. That said would you like it more if there was a single letter from toward the end of the alphabet lit up blue on the side?

EDIT: I don't know for sure if thats what's coming but thats the architectural language thats being spoken in this image.

Not quite a twin a little smaller in size same height and design but not an exact twin.

Why would lamp posts and large pillars be installed to the top floor of the deck if a large structure is to be built above it before it opens?

In order to get a CO and close out the parking deck permits/contract.

I'm sure the hotel is on hold for now given the state of things.   Plus, when construction starts it's not difficult to take down the lamp post, probably take a day or two.
