Meijer market, hotel project billed as 'game-changer' for downtown Lansing

Quote

LANSING — A grocery store and a hotel are planned for the 600 block of East Michigan Avenue, part of a mixed-use development slated to open by the end of 2020.

The project will "engage the pride of downtown Lansing residents and drastically change the quality of living." Developer Pat Gillespie said in a news release sent out ahead of the Wednesday announcement. .

The market, hotel and several one and two-story residential units will occupy a 4.15-acre site on the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Larch Street that was once the location of Brogan's Tire Center and the Ballpark Mobil gas station, among other properties. It sits kitty-corner from Cooley Law School Stadium.

The urban Meijer will be 37,000 square feet, and the project also a 124-room hotel and an unspecificied number of apartments.

The introduction of the brownfield for 600 East Michigan happened this week. This is the first big move sense the rezoning of this land a few months back. The working name is Capital City Market.  Stats are still that it'll be around 153,000 square feet with the market, a 120-125 room flagship hotel, only 36 apartments, and 298 surface parking spaces. Demolition will start early next year with the store opening by fall 2020 and the rest by December of that year.

The brownfield for this one - as well as some zoning variances - were recently approved by various city bodies, giving this plan its final approvals.  They are hoping to have shovels in the ground by March:

The project sits on 4.15 acres on the southeast corner of Michigan Avenue and Larch Street. It will include 36 one- and two-bedroom apartments. Concord Hospitality, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, will own and operate the hotel. Gillespie Group will invest about $25 million in the project. The hotel developer will chip in $16.5 million.

This site is one of the more legit brownfields given the former uses of the site which include a large auto repair shop and a gas station which left underground tanks on site along with quite a few other industrial businesses that are long-gone.
