Trying to put two different shaped fields together inside one stadium is a problem nobody has come up with a satisfactory solution for.

If they could come up with a "Steimetz Hall" style solution where they use hydraulics and rails to move a portion of the stands out for baseball then back in for football, maybe that could work.

Of course it would probably cost almost as much as just building a separate stadium.

A lot of the "circle" stadiums in the 60's and 70's were built in just that way. You only need to look at the Astrodome to see that.

Sidenote, today you can run the bases in the Turner field parking lot where this stadium once stood.  My dad, not wanting to "run" the bases decided to the round the bases in the family's 93 Plymouth Grand Voyager.   It was a hair raising experience to say the least.

Or the old Atlanta Falcons/Braves stadium.

Fulton County Stadium I believe it was called.

Three Rivers in Pittsburgh, Veteran's Stadium in Philly, Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Shea Stadium in NYC, and RFK in DC were all the same basic stadium at Fulton County shown above.

Shea was the first to drop football and be converted to all baseball in 1984.

You could seriously look at any of them and think you were looking at one of the others.  They all had problems with the multi-use aspect.  Having been to four of them personally, they all sucked for whichever sport I was there for.

Demolished in:

  • 1997 - Fulton County Stadium
  • 2001 - Three Rivers Stadium
  • 2002 - Riverfront Stadium
  • 2004 - Veteran's Stadium
  • 2005 - Busch Stadium
  • 2009 - Shea Stadium (extended life by converting to MLB only in 1984 when the NFL left after the 1983 season)
  • Future ~2021 - RFK Stadium (although, it ceased to be home to the NFL in 1996 and ceased to be home to MLB in 2007, it has been home to MLS since 1996)

RFK has no tenant. DC United moved to Soccer Specific Audi Field in July 2018.

On September 5, 2019, Events DC announced plans to demolish the stadium by 2021. Officials said the decision would save $2 million a year on maintenance and $1.5 million a year on utilities.
