This parking deck getting the color really looks beautiful in person. Really adds character to the building. Makes the deck feel less garagey if that makes sense.

I would say yes for their apartment tower starting really soon.

apartments are much easier to finance and condo towers are extremely hard with high pre sale requirements.  Boutique condo buildings are being built in Charlotte but they are very small and quite expensive.

Today Sycamore is gone!   I think the parking deck paint colors were from the Velvet Taco across the street.

Do you guys think new-sycamore will be as successful as old-sycamore? There is no doubt that there will be lots of fanfare and plenty of people attending the opening weeks/months but I cant help but feel that their new space will be considerably less appealing. 

There was something very approachable to the old sycamore--just walk right up off the rail trail and grab a beer at a picnic table. Food truck Fridays and their huge band parties in the gravel lot were awesome! It felt authentic and real. It was the perfectly un-curated space in the middle of so many restaurants and bars whose first (and only) goal is ~vibes~ and being instagramable. I just cant imagine Sycamore being in the bottom of a brand new 16 story office tower will have the same draw.

I hope I'm wrong though...

It'll probably be generational and perception to the individual IMO.  To those that were at the first food truck Friday at the old lot at W Park & Camden the Sycamore recreation felt less authentic and community built.  Not that it was bad, it was just different from what made it special to some of us older SouthEnd-ers.  Sycamore never felt super authentic SouthEnd to me if you compared to the original spots of my age group like Dharma Lounge, Vinny's and their $1 PBR tall boys, Lux, original Common Market or the divey vibe of Tavern & Gin Mill before the area blew up etc.   I still enjoyed it, it's where my wife and I had our first date but it was just a different vibe to me and reflective of where the neighborhood was going.  Similar to how the new locale is reflective of the new (and taller) era of the next generation.  It may never feel the same to you or I but I'm sure it will to others.  C'est le vie and it's what makes being part of a community and seeing it change over time exciting but also somber in other ways

Biz Journal reports this today:

""Construction crews are preparing to go vertical on Portman Holdings' 24-story apartment tower where Sycamore Brewing once stood.

Brittani Sanders, Portmans' vice president of development, said they obtained permits for the footing and foundation in late November and expect to have the full building permit early next year.

"We just got our foundation and frame permit that will allow us to top out the building," she said. "Cranes should be going up soon, so we'll really start to see some vertical movement in January or February."

Plans for 2161 Hawkins include 370 luxury residential units,18,700 square feet of ground-floor retail and restaurant space and an activated plaza and green space that will take shape between 2161 Hawkins and The Line, next door at 2151 Hawkins St. Amenities will include concierge service, a rooftop pool, coworking spaces, a game room, climbing wall, indoor and outdoor fitness centers and a fourth-floor sky bridge connection to The Line.""

The thing to watch going into 2023 is which apartment towers get started with actual construction next year.  I would expect some will some won't as planned.  But this one of course is a go and it is beautiful.
