Back in June of this year, 2018, it was reported that the Huntsville City Council approved the development agreement of a new hotel to be built downtown.  The hotel is reported to be a $30 million development as a Curio by Hilton located at 106 Jefferson Street between Clinton Ave and the courthouse square.  AL.com reports that the hotel will be 100 rooms while WHNT reports 117 rooms.  It is reported that the hotel will have a rooftop bar, a full-service restaurant, and meeting space.  Construction is planned to start in March of 2019 with an estimated completion date of February 2020.

The developer is Crunkleton Commercial Real Estate and reported to be Downtown Huntsville's first full-service boutique hotel.  This will be the 3rd Curio hotel in AL with two existing locations in Birmingham and Mobile.  Seems like they are calling it 106 Jefferson and the city is reported to pitch in up to $1.5 million for block enhancements, such as streetscape improvements, to help link it with other portions of the city.  The site is currently occupied by a boarded up building which housed the former Hale Brothers Furniture.  Hale Brothers Furniture seems to have been closed for several years now.  The city will reportedly set aside 168 parking spots for hotel use in the Clinton Ave garage.

According to Huntsville Mayor, Tommy Battle, the hotel will bring the total number of hotel rooms within walking distance to the Von Braun Center to 800.  The goal is to reach 1000 rooms.

Here are a couple of pics I took Tuesday when I was in the area.  Looks like workers are razing the buildings where the Curio is going.  I was afraid of this.  I saw these buildings a few months before the hotel announcement, and I thought that they were going to be renovated.  A bit torn on this one.  The hotel will be nice, but I would rather have seen these buildings repurposed and the hotel built on a surface lot a block away.
