Every time you have a big event at Spectrum, they have to shut it down and move it somewhere else.

I think CATS would love to do that, the CTC has certain advantages but is a huge headache for staff & riders in many ways. All it takes is $$$

^You'd think after seeing how the original Blue Line stations all became heavy bus transfer locations  that CATS would learn to design BLE stations better for bus transfers. And yet most of the new stations lack bus bays or have a maximum of two to three bays for the few stations with them.  This poor planning continued even after having to expensively retrofit 485 station for more buses and Arrowood for a comfort station.  If CATS is truly committed to replacing CTC, they're doing very little to help set up that future.

So I did CLT to Asheville this weekend and a few observations:

1)  downtown 85 to 74 was a breeze;

2) Once I hit Shelby it sucked, but;

3) Once I was in Rutherford County it was a breeze all the way to downtown Asheville.

Something I didn't realize is the Shelby bypass is a lot farther along than I realized, meaning I could get from Charlotte to Asheville in about 1:45 once the road is complete.  That's not too shabby all things considered.

Headed the other way, the Monroe bypass has been a godsend, I just don't look forward to the day when it's bumper to bumper like huge swaths of 485 are now.  Not sure they built enough lanes but we shall see.  Now, if we could get a bypass around Wadesboro we'd have a highway from Asheville to Wilmington.  It'll still be a six hour haul but considering it takes 8 hours on 40 that's a nice improvement.

You got lucky. I26 from Asheville to Hendersonville can be utterly miserable anymore

already planned to be widen from Asheville south to Hendo.

Shelby does not suck.  Seriously it only adds about 20 minutes to your Journey, unless you hit it during rush hour(s).  Don't get me wrong it's a relatively cheap project, and worth securing the ROW for, but man I'm loath to add more highway miles.  Especially when There are so many other projects that need funding. (I-77, statewide and regional transit needs, figuring out some way to address the traffic on I-85 in Gastonia during rush hour, etc...)  Don't get me wrong the project will totally help me out (i'm just north of Shelby), and bring some much needed infrastructure to northern Cleveland County making it more attractive for jobs.  but I have to question if that money would be better spent elsewhere.

And to answer your question about the Monroe bypass, they did not build enough lanes.  There is no such thing as enough lanes.   If you build it we will clog it.

      The search for this thread was prompted by the big announcement that Crescent Communities is being acquired by Sumitomo Forestry America, a subsidiary of a Japanese firm.
      There are many sides to this transaction:
      Sumitomo Forestry America will pump more capital and is more vertically integrated now to handle future expansion and also sees huge potential in Charlotte. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/latest-news/article209961859.html in June of 2009 Crescent Resources filed for bankruptcy protection -- in June of 2010 they emerged https://www.bizjournals.com/charlotte/stories/2010/06/14/story2.html Rebranded in 2013 to Crescent Communities. Is Crescent -- being intimately acquainted with the market -- trying to cash out as this development cycle is ending? Or worse -- Crescent sees similarities to 2008 in the economy in general and is cashing out? Lets try to stick in the "market analysis" and stay away from "doom and gloom" - "sky is falling" realm.
       
      I tried to find an existing thread for this, but the one I found is archived and not open for new posts... and it is from the "Great Recession" days.

      I couldn't find a thread for the River District so I made one. I happen to be really excited about the River District, Most U.S. Major cities are on a river. Charlotte is near a river but not on it and I think River District will fill that hole, Most cities that have a river have lots of shopping and dining options along the river.

      Haven't seen any news articles on this yet but ZipCar will be expanding into Uptown/Southend this summer. The city is providing 6 on-street locations and Zipcar will be providing 6 off-street locations. This is a 2 year pilot after which the city will decide to make it permanent or not.
      Some sample Zipcar locations will be:
      -Romere Bearden Park
      -UNCC/First Ward Park
      -New Bern Station
      Charlotte has been really late to the game in getting a car sharing service but glad it is finally arriving. This will give those of us that live downtown and don't own a car another transportation option for those longer in-city trips where transit takes too long or isn't available.
      I think the city should also partner with Car2Go. I have used this service in DC before and it's a nice alternative to uber/lyft if you don't mind driving yourself...plus you can park wherever you want as long as it its a legal parking spot.
