I'm still in the camp that the area can not support multiple casinos, nor should it be pursuing multiple casinos. There should be one that doesn't have competition. I'm afraid if there were multiple, neither would be as successful as it could be without competition.

Biloxi, Mississippi has EIGHT casinos.  And that doesn't count the casinos in New Orleans and the other cities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. If anything, competition has made for a better experience for casino visitors.  More freebies, more discounts,  free events for the whole family.  I lost track of all the discounted buffets and lunch specials that i went to when i was stationed in Gulfport.  One casino means a "take it or leave it" experience.

The Portsmouth casino needs General Assembly approval. The Pamunkey casino does not.

From the Pilot article at the beginning of this thread:

”One is the type of casino. Class 3 gambling — Las Vegas-style table games and slots — would require state approval. But Class 2 gambling, which includes a certain type of slot machine and other games, does not.”

If they’re going to be ‘world class’ then they will require state approval as well - and they’ve already said they’re trying to join Lucas’s bill because it would be a quicker process than going the tribal route

As I read the article, when the Pamunkey tribe applied for federal recognition, they listed the areas where the tribe lived, farmed, and hunted.  Apparently, according to the Nansemond tribe's letter, they did not list any areas in the 7 cities.  It doesn't help that the previous chief of the Pamunkey tribe called the claim that Norfolk is ancestral Pamunkey land "a long stretch."

If I may, on what grounds does the said challenging group (Nansemond Tribe) have to question or contest any, I repeat ANY  claim an indigenous group has to the lands their so-called tribe occupied?  Why should any number of peoples respect the challenge a tribe has made to dispute the livelihood through casinos that the Pamunkey Tribe would benefit from?  I'm curious...

Both the Pamunkey Tribe and the Nansemond Tribe are Federally recognized and are not properly referred to as “so-called” Tribes.  It is my understanding that the dispute is about the geographic area to which each tribe is indigenous.  We know they are both indigenous to what is now Virginia, but the Nansemond seem to be claiming that the area which the Pamunkey themselves claimed as their area of influence (to which they are indigenous) did not include Norfolk.  I believe Norfolk does fall into the areas of influence claimed by the Nansemond Tribe. This dispute will be settled within tribal courts rather than federal courts.

FWIW, I hope this issue can be settled, because as many others have stated, the Nansemond Tribe didn’t appear to be interested in pursuing a casino.

The Nansemond Tribe cannot pursue a casino per their federal recognition. The legislation that recognized them and other tribes in Virginia prohibits each of them from operating casinos. Only the Pumunkey can operate a casino, assuming the get the necessary approvals - including from the state, as they went the traditional route of recognition and did so about a year prior to the other tribes.

I have no reason to recognize the said tribes by any name assumed by either group.  Especially considering my own indigenous roots in these said areas.

I hope things work out too.  The fact that any "blocking" is happening now that a tribe is interested in a casino on some land is precious, at best

The Pamunkey proposal will continue to proceed along the federal track with no delay. The only thing this delay does is put the Portsmouth proposal at a disadvantage because their only path is through the state, whereas the Pamunkey  can do state or federal.

This effectively gives them a 2-year headstart, as any referendum allowing Portsmouth to proceed wouldn’t happen until November 2020.

…..oh good let's have a study.

Profits

Vegas = $6.2B

Atlantic City = $3B

Chicago = $2.2B

Detroit = $1.4B

Connecticut = $1.2B

Philly = $1.1B

St. Louis = $1.1B

Gulf Cost Miss. = $1.0B

Study Complete - Thank you Google

And to make this even closer to home (no pun intended), as of last October, MGM Grand in DC became MGM's 5th-highest revenue maker, with nearly $200M in the 3rd quarter of 2018.

One reason Governor Northam is pushing for casinos is to keep Virginians from leaving for West Virginia, Delaware, or DC/MD. If the General Assembly wants to lose out on that revenue, they deserve to get voted out.

I say include the pun LOL. Virginia has been loosing on that casino revenue front for a while.  People flock to these places just to go to the casino. I bet there’s a good percentage of ppl who go there that are probably from VA. All that money that “could” be spent here and they drag their feet??? I don’t get it.

Found a few different renderings that I hadn't seen before. The first is from WAVY-10, the other is from WJHL in Southwest VA/northern Tennessee.

There will be nothing new this year. The study doesn't complete until November. The referendum doesn't occur until November 2020. Other than perhaps some preliminary design, don't expect any significant movement until 2021 at the earliest.
