I don’t disagree but wasn’t the referendum site specific? I imagine a different site would require the process would essentially restart the entire process. In regards to redeveloping the city jail, the past plan to move the inmates to the regional jail will need to be rethought as the regional jail is likely being shut down.

Indeed.

Looking at the watered down crap that has been proposed for both cities, I am not against reopening the process and starting from scratch.

I’m trying my best not to complain about yet another city trying to compete instead of collaborate. I know they’ve wanted this for a while now, but part of me is a little annoyed that Portsmouth is trying to do their own waterfront casino right after Norfolk announced their plans.

Then again, if the Nansemond tribe interferes and blocks the Pamunkey proposal, it may be a moot point.

Sir Portsmouth was first, so be annoyed with Norfolk. In fact not only was Portsmouth first with a Casino proposal for the area, they were also first with the waterfront idea, and Portsmouth (City Senator Lucas) is the reason the state has 4 casinos coming after she sent the proposal for legalizing state gaming to the Governor. Know your facts before such a statement please and thanks

I’m very well aware of what Sen. Lucas tried to do. I was referring to Portsmouth announcing a waterfront casino right across the river from Norfolk’s. If you’re gonna be patronizing, maybe you should get your facts in order as well.

Portsmouth casino expected to open in January. I believe it is expected their license will be issued later this month at the lottery board’s quarterly meeting. The article also discusses the other Virginia casinos with Norfolk’s still projected for a 2024 opening with no timeline for construction. I recall it’s expected to be a two year build from construction start to opening.

Did Norfolk get approval to open the temporary casino at Harbor Park? I believe they wanted to open that one in December.

Not that it has to be a competition, but I thought Norfolk got the green light.

I know Planning recommended approval but haven’t seen whether or not city council approved for zoning purposes. Both temporary and permanent gaming licenses will need to be issued by the lottery board and that hasn’t happened yet. With all of the construction delays in general I’d be pretty surprised if they can get it open by December unless the work is minimal.

Curious about the Top Golf as one, this is very close to VB and I find it unusual that two locations would be so close together.... But this doesn't sound like the usual Top Golf? Is this just one of those virtual screens indoor only things?

So far all they’ve announced, with considerable unwarranted fanfare, is a bunch of stuff you’d normally find in a typical strip shopping center or mall…

Starbucks, Chinese food, a sandwich shop, and a pizza parlor. Now all they need is a payday loan shop and a nail salon and they'll have the quintessential Hampton Roads shopping center.

The steak/seafood place sounds decent at least

Hello. The most safety place for gambling is on usa online casinos. There is a list of the top platforms with great variety of games. This is completely safety, u just have to need a license for playing. Any casino starts with a license. If you play without it, most likely you will play on fake sites and run the risk of falling into the clutches of scammers. Licenses are issued by major gambling regulators, and reputable organizations operating in countries where gambling is officially permitted.

Virginia Lottery Board approves operating license for Portsmouth casino

Rivers Casino got their license today. Guessing the Lottery Board had a special meeting.
ETA: looking at the agenda it appears Rivers was the only item. I would expect the video to be published today or tomorrow. Next scheduled meeting is January 25th.

Looks like the city of Portsmouth and the developer have their act together.

So if the Norfolk casino falls through, would they be able to build a different casino elsewhere in the city but on non-Native American land (say a Hard Rock?)

I thought one of the requirements for the Pamunkey or any other casino was that it has to be Native American-owned. It seems to be one thing after another.

Nope, the referendums were very specific. They would need to start the process all over again, including holding another vote.

Seems comparable to the MGM national harbor….
