This would be really out of place. Seems like Portsmouth would benefit more by having it Downtown to help what’s already struggling there. There’s already hotels/entertainment there & certainly mo

Looking at the watered down crap that has been proposed for both cities, I am not against reopening the process and starting from scratch.

the renders look kinda like a walmart and a hampton inn made love....

Please tell me that's not it? This is a joke right? So they went from a big pocketed developer who wanted to build the tallest building in the region on the waterfront to what can only be described as business class Hilton Garden Inn with a casino attached... Building excitement indeed.

Not in the best place IMO.

Nope, should have stayed on the waterfront.

I can see now why the Pamunkey upped their project to $500 million. They are NOT threatened by this thing...at all.

I mean, at least make it kinda urban and try to integrate it into the fabric of the city. I fail to see how this will help revitalize adjoining areas. Such a missed opportunity. This is so sad, I wish Portsmouth would stop selling themselves short and hold out for higher quality. Even Cordish would build a better casino than that.

^ At the same time, we shouldn't expect Las Vegas type of casino resorts either. This is Portsmouth. It seems fitting for the area.

But that's the problem. "This is Portsmouth" is what's held them back for so long. Accepting less, because they think they can't do better. At a certain point, they have to demand better if they wish to get out of the rut they're in. On balance, it's better to have this development than not, but I am not in the camp that thinks this is the best they can do.

Another article. It should be said, all of Rush Street Gaming’s casinos look like this, so at least they’re not giving Portsmouth their version of an inferior product. That said, I wish Portsmouth had gone with a higher quality developer.

The casino looks like something you would see in King of Prussia Pa. outside of Philly.  We went there once and it definitely has a suburban hotel vibe.  I just don't like all of the surface parking.  Its still a good development for that part of Portsmouth that is more suburban in nature.

I mean it is a suburban hotel. Once they moved it out of Downtown and off of the waterfront I had little hope for the look of it.

That decision still infuriates me. Absolutely nonsensical.

This has bait and switch written all over it. We have hotels of substantially higher quality than that at the Oceanfront, and now they might not build one altogether? I hope Portsmouth didn't sign any contracts with these people, they need to go back to the drawing board. Maybe get Cordish involved in this one.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.wavy.com/news/local-news/portsmouth/portsmouth-casino-developer-commits-to-building-hotel-but-wont-say-when/amp/

"PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Developers looking to bring a casino to Portsmouth say they are also committed to building a hotel as part of the project, even though, as of now, they don’t know when construction would start — and legally they may never have to build it."

This... Is bad. Man, how did they agree to a contract like that? Whoever was responsible for the negotiation of that deal should be fired. These are the types of provisions that should be discussed in the open before a vote by either the council or the citizens in a referendum. The fact that the majority of the council is shocked by this clause says a lot...

It feels like there is a contract.  Portsmouth should demand a hotel or no casino.   Otherwise this thing is just a Walmart....

From the article

Norfolk’s competing casino must be open for a full year and net gaming revenue for Portsmouth’s casino must reach $175 million in that same time frame for the developer to be obligated to build the hotel and convention center. If Portsmouth’s net gaming revenue reaches $250 million in a straight 24-month period, they would also be compelled to build.

In the case that neither of those benchmarks are reached after four years and Rush Street Gaming hasn’t started to plan for a hotel, the city has the option to bring another developer to do the job.

so not great, but not too bad. Basically if they make 175 in the first years or 250 in two subsequent years they will be required to build the hotel.

What a junk contract.  If I were Mr. Yarborough and the Pamunkey tribe, I would get the shovels in the ground, go back to the $750 million range proposal...and put these people out of their misery quick.  Nothing against Portsmouth, it’s just smart business. Reminds  me of Stony Point Fashion Park versus Short Pump.
