The Toronto islands community is one of the most unique places in North America. Located just minutes from downtown acrossed the lake but in a rustic secluded setting, it is the largest car-free community in North America. The inhabitants of this residential area lease the properties from the city in 99-year terms and there are strict rules for the buying and selling of the properties....Photos by KGB at SSC forum.

Oh you could probably afford it. The houses don't cost much but they are basically impossible to get. You have to go on a waiting list and wait till someone moves out, or dies, even if someone dies it can be passed down through the family. They kind of have a weird agreement with the city, its hard to explain really.

That's cool. A very rustic place, but smack in the middle of an urban area.

Reminds me of Pittsburgh's own island community of Washington's Landing. Ours is pretty new, so it lacks the rustic feel. But it still sort of serves as an island oasis within the city. Here are couple of pics I Googled:
