Truist - New HQ (BB&T-SunTrust Merger)

Well the new Truist sign in Atlanta on the old 60 story Sun Trust Plaza is creating a controversy but I think a sign looks better there than on their HQ here in Charlotte.

All I can do is protest by not doing business with Truist. Plenty of other banks and credit unions out there that have more respect for the built environment.

This looks so hilariously bad. I'd prefer no or minimal signage. This is just gaudy and not in the fun, ironic way.

True story: Truist called me and asked if I would consider opening an account.... I specifically told them I would never open an account with Truist until the signs are removed. I also told the rep I would move ALL of my money to Truist if they took the signs down - as a thank you. I'm a man of my word, too. Signs are still up.... So they must have looked at my bank account and decided the hassle wasn't worth it LOL

Ours is absolutely worse. This rendering might get worse if they do the same as Charlotte and just slap a beige rectangle behind the Truist names but at least this tower gets smaller at the top unlike Hearst. I actually kind of like the "T" logos at the top.

The signs (particularly during the day) are indeed terrible.  However, let's not forget that the 6th largest bank in America relocated headquarters to Charlotte and didn't ask for a dime from the city or state.  They also immediately donated $30 million to affordable housing efforts in Charlotte.  So, by all means bash the signage but maybe recognize that Truist has otherwise been an excellent corporate citizen in our city.

Ours is so much worse.  If the Charlotte one looked like this and didn't have the beige background, it would be fine.  The background makes it look like a cheap billboard during the day.  At night when it's lit up, it's not that bad, IMO.

ATL’s is kind of neat at least. Reminds me of the opening credits in the movie, Panic Room.  Orlando’s looks like it was purposely design to have signage. Ours was literally an afterthought.

Ours is godawful. Plastered letters on a giant piece of cardboard.
However, I have gotten used to it until now though. Thanks KJH, lol I’m just messing.

Actually Orlando's was designed to say SunTrust so a few less letters Truist looks good on that one.

I don’t know… I think the cardboard on the HQ really resonates downtown alley dumpster aesthetics and at night? It’s fancy lights. The darkness hiding some features, but during the day…

Let’s not forget about the OG BB&T HQ in the 336 (Winston-Salem). Hope they don’t slap on the hideous Truist up on that nice green glass. However, they have taken the old sign down…just a matter of time…

I agree the other cities signs are tacky too.... but the problem with ours is that they covered up the literal crown of the architectural features to do it. All of the other examples are bland architecture and while tacky, don't detract from the buildings the way our does. Remove the beige box and it would be a marked improvement. I'd still complain... but it would def be better.

Ours would look 10x better without the cardboard background. I’d take ATLs version in a heartbeat. The floating letters look, however, any signage on the Hearst is doing a disservice to the original design of the building. 
 

Just imagine the uproar of BOACC slapped up signage up there…same concept.

I’m convinced they can’t do worst than their own HQ… to be fair all signs look tacky in their own way but agreed, floating letter over cardboard cutout with letters glued on.

Just imagine the uproar of BOACC slapped up signage up there…same concept. 

the floating letters would have required drilling directly into the facade in around 40 places, something that could not be fixed ever, and would likely have compromised the granite face. They hung it over the side, which required a backer for structural integrity.

We just have to endure this signage until Truist inevitably merges with somebody else or gets taken over and the name changes again. Truist + US Bank would make sense and provide some competition against the Big 4.  The combined branch network would cover nearly the entire country, with the only big hole being New York through New England.

This has ALWAYS been my hope since they started talking about a second 7th St tower.  Just like BA and Wells have signage on secondary buildings but not on their HQs.  You just know what they are without needing to shout about it.  Hopefully this is their plan.  Or someone there stumbles on this thread and agrees it’s a great idea…

I hope so…that sign is a crime against architecture.  I think looks worse than what would have resulted if we’d just let a graffiti artist go up top and paint the word Truist on the side of the building.  Every time I drive to downtown it just about makes my stomach turn.  It has defaced an otherwise picturesque skyline.

The thing is that the massive size of it makes it exponentially worse.  If it were scaled down about 25% it wouldn't be quite as gaudy.  It would still suck but it wouldn't be so damn in your face.  Hell, if Trump were to see it even he would be like, "That's a bit much".
