KJHburg
the herd of elk in Cherokee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The herd continues to grow in NC. Appearing most evenings after 5 pm and after rainstorms daily by the meadow by the Oconaluftee Visitors Center. NC's own mini Serengeti and sometimes wild turkeys are seen too.
videtur quam contuor
We stayed at a friends house near Cattaloochee Valley about this time of year and near dusk came the most unearthly sound echoing from the hills. The Hound of the Baskervilles, or butchering the largest rhinoceros imaginable. Astounding and a bit frightening in its volume. It was revealed to be the rutting bellows of the elk and Boy, Howdy are they ever loud. 3
KJHburg
I can't help myself these elk are so beautiful and here is one walking in the Oconaluftee River in the National Park. If you have not visited GSMNP in a while make plans to soon. There is a reason this is the MOST visited national park in the country.

KJHburg
One of things I love about Charlotte is our location. 3 hours to Great Smoky Mountains National Park with its elk and 3-4 hours to the Lowcountry of SC with its gators, great coastal birds. From the lowcountry an anhinga, a gator, a blue heron. The anhinga is a great bird excellent underwater swimmer to catch fish and crabs but it needs to dry off its wings before flight.

KJHburg
Wounded eagles that live at the NC Aquarium in Pine Knoll Shores on the NC coast. Plus some sea creatures and I have now been to 2 of the 3 aquariums this year and they are all worth a visit. These eagles have retired to the NC coast like so many others. Last photo sunset over Trent River in New Bern.

Vitamin_N
I didn't get a picture but over the weekend I saw a deer crossing Woodlawn a little to the east of South Blvd. It's kind of weird seeing them cross a road like that. Fortunately, traffic was light at the time.

KJHburg
Birds of the lowcountry and just about anywhere in Coastal North and South Carolina but in abundance here in Hilton Head. Those are not ducks in that lake they are anhingas which are excellent underwater swimmers and can fly after drying their wings. A hawk I think at the lagoon on the sign looking for some fish like I was for lunch. Edited December 18, 2021 by KJHburg

KJHburg
Gator walks up to a Bojangles in Southport NC . "It's Bo Time!" KJHburg
The elk of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park like the NC side much better (just like me) and they hang out most of the time on the NC side. From Balsam Mountain and Heintooga area of the park and from the Oconaluftee Visitors Center outside of Cherokee. Notice the elk getting some milk from its mom. And check out those racks! This week from GSMNP NC side. 52 were introduced into the park where they once roamed freely and now the herd is about 200 elk. if you not seen the elk of NC here you are missing something and only 3 hours from the QC!
