Greensboro beat out Orlando, Florida and Birmingham, England for the 2019 championships. This will be the third time the event has been held in the United States. Last year it was in Philadelphia. It will last April, 14th to April 21st and will be held at the Koury Convention Center. Greensboro's experience in hosting such events and its great facilities and adequate hotels is a reason the city was selected. Greensboro has hosted the nationally televised U.S. Figure Skating Championships twice and will host it again January 2020.

But the World Irish Dancing Championships is truly an international event. The city plans for more than 5,000 female and male dancers, ages 8 to 30, from more than 27 countries, and 10,000 to 25,000 spectators.

For eight days, dancers and accompanying musicians will fill Koury ballrooms with the music of accordions and choruses of clacking shoes. The city expects to rent 18,500 rooms in about 20 hotels

The visitors and convention bureau estimated that the event will mean about $7.5 million in economic impact from spending on hotel rooms, restaurants, shopping, transportation and sightseeing.

On April 18, First National Bank Field in downtown Greensboro  will hold World Irish Dancing Championships Championships Night during the Greensboro Grasshoppers game.  Great way to show off our downtown to international tourists.
