Warsaw from a past trip. The much-reviled Palace of Culture and Science, almost 800’ high, was completed in Stalinist Gothic style in 1955. The Poles don’t like it since it was a “fraternal gift” from the USSR.

Vilnius, Lithuania. The first photo is the Soviet-era sports palace. The TV tower was the location of independence protests in 1990 in which protestors were shot by the Soviet OMON riot police

From a visit to Minsk, Belarus-claimed to be the cleanest city in the world. I stayed in an Airbnb on Victory Square, in the same building where Lee Harvey Oswald lived with his Soviet wife, Marina, in the early 60’s. The last structure is KGB headquarters. Yes, they retained many soviet agencies.

From my Fall 2019 trip to Rīga, Latvia, the largest city of the three Baltic States. It has the highest percentage (25%) of Art Nouveau buildings in the world, with the obligatory Stalinist Gothic skyscraper. You can rent a bike and enjoy a scenic ride out to the beachside town of Jūrmala..

I couldn’t leave Estonia out of this thread! I hadn’t been to Tallinn in almost 20 years and it now looks like a prosperous Scandinavian city, with no traces of its time as part of the USSR. I also visited Tartu, the university city SE of Tallinn. Six Tartu pics at the end, with views of the university and the Imperial Russian arch bridge.

We visited Kyiv at the exact same time in 2019 - what a coincidence! Great experience for me. I was especially impressed by their transit infrastructure and underground commercial spaces.

Wow, that’s amazing. I rarely met Americans the two times I was there. Before the current war, it’s a fair bet that 95% of Americans wouldn’t have been able to find it on a map.

I agree on the transit. Kyiv has some of the deepest stations in the world. Their metro is also spotlessly clean.

It's inland.  That's not the Atlantic surrounding it.  Although it's certainly close so mother nature could do her thing.

This is awesome news for that community!  The thing I'm taking note of is the top.  It's essentially a box, yet by simply curving the corners, the aesthetic is so very different IMO.

I was last in Austin about 8 years ago, when Frost tower (just right of center) was the tallest.
