How could Myrtle Beach have the second-longest commutes in the world: is the workforce mostly hourly employees in tourism-related industries who live far away due to housing costs?  Or what?

This is probably just a case of misstated data. More than likely, the dataset is based on trips ending and beginning in Myrtle Beach vs actual commutes.

Agreed, but then again I wouldn't doubt that a lot of folks from the poorer parts of the Pee Dee travel a long ways for those hospitality jobs. I recall an article a couple years back about how folks from Allendale travel to Hilton Head for those sorts of jobs on chartered buses everyday; they leave very early in the morning and return later in the night. It's probably bad data... sort of. If you are commuting into MB from Conway in the summer, the 5 roads that cross into the strand are always backed up. It probably screws the average quite a bit.
