This gem was before its time it was a 14 story office tower proposed at South Tryon and Morehead where apartments are rising today.  They could not find any office tenants interested.  Now after Dimension Funds, Allstate, EY, Lendingtree, Lowes Tech they surely could have found some now.  

1000 South Tryon, a new 300,000 SF, Class A office building development at the gateway corner of Charlotte' s Tryon and Morehead Streets. Designed by Smallwood Reynolds Architects of Atlanta, GA, the 14-story building will have unimpeded views of Charlotte' s CBD skyline, ideally positioned at the entrance to both Downtown and South End. 1000 South Tryon features 22,500 SF floorplates, and its parking deck will have a ratio of 3.0 spaces per 1,000 SF of office space. The office building will have retail on the first floor, and a multi-family facade is planned for the side of the parking deck fronting Morehead Street. Trinity Capital Advisors is developing the building.

Here is a blast from the past Heritage USA in Fort Mill uncompleted 21 story hotel tower.  Still legal wrangling between York County and the church that owns it.  It is literally falling apart.  Not sure why the county is still insisting it should be torn down if they can complete it. Now surrounded by Regent Park neighborhoods but there are still elements of the old PTL Club there and I will let y'all look that up.  Who remembers the Wendys in the same of a castle never open but almost complete?  That was torn down next to the waterpark.

Children, this is a story from the early days of the Praise The Lord Ministry.  Sometime in the '70's.

"PTL" was at the current Forest Hills Church location and was growing like Topsy*. Their success was far more than the organization anticipated and the administration and staff were unprepared for the rush of followers to their televised "ministry". One of the issues was that as they increased their studio and broadcast scope the accounts payable people were unable to maintain proper controls. Bills went unpaid for long periods as money flooded in and immediately went out again without going through proper accounting, among other control failures. A man I knew in Atlanta was the regional manager for Ampex, an equipment manufacturer for professional sound engineers. They had numerous unpaid invoices from PTL. The orders from PTL keep coming and they told the PTL office they would supply their requests but it was C.O.D. No unloading until the driver received a check. The Ampex office received a call from their driver that he was at PTL and they were unable to pay with a check for the sizeable invoice. The manager came onto the call and insisted no unloading until payment. A few minutes later the driver called again. He sounded scared and feverish. He said that two people had come to his truck with bags of xx,ooo$ cash. CASH. The driver said he was NOT going to leave with that cash in his cab. Another call or two and eventually a check was produced. 

 

*An old term to mean accelerated growth. Topsy was a character in Uncle Tom's Cabin.

The church and county should agree to sell it to an investor and do apartments. The area might not call for that kind of density but to let that building go to waste is...well... wasteful.

I remember those days. Their first location was at Park Rd. Extension and Park Rd.  (an old elementary school friend... last name Allen if you knew them).  They then moved farther down Park Rd. Extension near Huntingtown Farms. I remember taking a few friends down there when things were literally off the rails. We just walked right into their studio and pretended like we belonged. Nobody cared.  What a scene. My friends (from Latin America) were so taken aback by the abject greed.  They were ringing bells and all that crazy cheering stuff when the money was tallied up.

Impressive. Disappointing none of these were built. As a lurker on all of the forums I've noticed something and wonder if any of you know the answer. Charlotte is often mentioned as a peer of Austin and Nashville. However I've noticed that Austin and Nashville routinely announces new buildings. Like on a biweekly basis. With Austin's announcements being single buildings and Nashville's announcements being for multiple buildings. Are developers forgetting about Charlotte or are they deliberately skipping over Charlotte to focus on building in Austin and Nashville?

Scraperguy, I'll answer that for you.  First, I don't follow Austin all that close, but I do Nashville.  In any case, whats going on in Nashville is basically renouncements so to speak.  They will announce a proposal, then when they start building that's an announcement as well.  Being honest, Nashville is exploding right now with Skyscraper announcments.  I get exactly where you coming from.
