This conversation is irrelevant and ridiculous. Have y'all ever been to NYC?

Of course, Charlotte has its status as a major banking center. That doesn't mean prestigious financial firms will flock here. These entirely crazed perceptions of crime in the city could never detract from its institutional advantages.

I think that it's relevant.  Charlotte, Dallas, Salt Lake, and Jacksonville have lured lots of financial services jobs, and I think that Charlotte is best suited to snag more, just like Raleigh-Durham is well-poised to snag pharma jobs from Boston and San Francisco.

I can assault anyone in NYC and be out with no bail same day.

Crime stats here you go:

https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/pr0706/nypd-citywide-crime-statistics-june-2020#:~:text=NYPD Announces Citywide Crime Statistics for June 2020,when compared to the same period in 2019.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/02/nyregion/nyc-shootings-murders.html

some CEOs of major companies have expressed concerns as well.

But back to Charlotte and our financial industry I do think it is continue to grow by all kinds of firms big and small.   Moody's and MUFG continue to grow here in Charlotte to name a few.

But these data don't speak to the point you are trying to make (I am not trying to pick a fight, I am just trying to get a handle on this). What is the crime rate of NYC in comparison to Charlotte? Your discussion assumes that Charlotte's crime rate is lower and I am not sure that is true.

Here is some data I grabbed from wikipedia, I think the data are pretty stale, but it was what popped up on google first  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

image.png.470a8d0d29cf27df0dbe30fbc00199d6.png

At the time these data were collected Charlotte had nearly 2x as much violent crime as NYC (and wayyyyy more property crime). The relevant question here is what do these comparisons  look like today. I don't think the issue can be usefully framed by only looking at bump in crime rates in NYC. Surely rational CEOs would want to look at the data in the destination city before moving if crime is driving their desire to leave NY?

While there has certainly been an uptick in murders over 2019, the nyt had this important caveat below. It doesn't play into the narrative that certain "law and order" candidates try to paint.

It’s Been ‘Such a Weird Year.’ That’s Also Reflected in Crime Statistics. https://nyti.ms/38zrWUu

Dear Mayor de Blasio:

As employers who are committed to New York City and its re-emergence from the devastating health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are confident that New York can and shall remain a thriving global center of commerce, innovation and opportunity.

Despite New York’s success in containing the coronavirus, unprecedented numbers of New Yorkers are unemployed, facing homelessness, or otherwise at risk. There is widespread anxiety over public safety, cleanliness and other quality of life issues that are contributing to deteriorating conditions in commercial districts and neighborhoods across the five boroughs.

We need to send a strong, consistent message that our employees, customers, clients and visitors will be coming back to a safe and healthy work environment. People will be slow to return unless their concerns about security and the livability of our communities are addressed quickly and with respect and fairness for our city’s diverse populations.

We urge you to take immediate action to restore essential services as a necessary precursor for solving the city’s longer term, complex, economic challenges. Consistent with analysis and recommendations laid out in A Call for Action and Collaboration, a report on the impact of COVID-19 published by the Partnership for New York City in July, we are prepared to help advise and support such an effort.

We look forward to your response and to partnering with you and others who share a commitment to a vibrant recovery and a great future for our city.

I'm sure you're aware of the flip side of bail? Poor people end up in jail for years waiting for a trial while the wealthy are immediately released. A good number of people in jail are innocent minorities.

This whole trope of the dangerous cities, being pushed by the current admin, is bullcrap. First patented by Nixon and been saving Republicans with no ideas ever since. Great misdirection.

Even the FT article mentioned only uses data to push these talking points also.  If you look at the actual historical data, large cities have never been safer.  Soon Charlotte will be twisted that way by politicians also, I wonder if some of the people on this board that are still be towing that line.

To be honest, the constant anti-NYC and anti-West Coast blah blah is getting tiring here on this board lately.  And this comes from someone who was born and raised in the South.

This letter is garbage. Sure NYC is seeing in increase in problems. But there's also a global pandemic STILL happening, a president that just does not care, an election year that is probably going to end badly, and all of this just goes to highlight the post recession bubble we have all grown comfortable with. It's time it pops. For over a decade NYC has leveraged the needs of wealthy business leaders over the needs of majority of its citizens. And De Blasio continues to capitulate to them. Look at the mess on the Upper West Side where wealthy, liberal people drove out homeless. Look, we can look at Quality of Life issues as issues that need to be resolved, but all we are doing as a society is putting a bandaid over them and hoping no one sees them.  We are working within a broken system - economically, socially, politically, globally.

The corporate relocations don't solve the problem if all they are is for clout. I mean...look at Shanghai where they have the 2nd tallest building in the world and the largest mall in the world and both sit half empty. And for what? Clout.

Sorry to get on a high horse, but this thread went off the rails and I needed to let of steam from reading some of these comments.

Did you see who authored the letter? LOL I trust their opinions over yours, sorry. Good luck with your socialist utopia(IE. Venezuela). Charlotte will be more than happy to take those "evil" wealthy companies.

Looks like mostly banks, hedge funds, and investment groups to me.  If you think they care about anything but profit,  you weren't paying attention in 07/08 apparently.

I also work for one of the largest corporations in the US, but putting your blind faith into them is naive at best.

Really? Posting a letter from CEO's is vitriol? Another "open minded" liberal trying to silence people of a different opinion.

I bank at Wells Fargo, Bank of America and 5/3 Bank.   That statement has more to do with this thread than other recent pages of discussion.  I was a Home Federal S&L customer which got bought out by Concord based First Charter which became Fifth Third Bank.

Lets talk about banking, banks, banking jobs etc in Charlotte and move the rest to Politics thread or what have you.

Out of shear curiosity KJHburg, why do you bank at 3 different institutions?  I bank at only two, WF and Ally, and I'd much prefer to keep everything under one roof if I could.

BofA gave me a mortgage on low priced condo when no one would without high fees and they gave me a checking account too.   So I bank there and keep my condo earnings and expenditures there.  Used to like the old Wachovia's online banking the best then Wells took over now that title goes to Bank of America.    My favorite banking app of the big 2 here in Charlotte would be Bank of America but Wells is not bad but their camera function is picky.  I always price foreign currency with the 2 big boys when I am going out of the country and have used both for getting foreign cash.

5/3 is where my company banks and opened a personal account there to make easier.  Was a SouthTrust/Wachovia/WellsFargo customer and a Home Federal/FirstCharter/5/3 customer.

the sad thing when I am out of town I barely can find any of them just joking of course but when I need a BofA only Wells in sight and vice versa and 5/3 branches are in obscure places.

am I 100% satisfied all the time? no that is why I bank with multiples.  Will open an account at Truist when they brand that way here in the Carolinas as they are everywhere the other 3 are not.

I hear Ally is good but I am just old fashion I like my banks to have big buildings with big lobbies LOL.

I’m satisfied with Ally because of the higher interest rates, I’ve earned more in interest this year than I ever earned on my Wachovia/Wells Fargo Way2Save.

And you would love my building society (credit union) back in the UK! When I moved my savings to them (Nationwide) in 2019, they gave me a passbook! Like this one:

I apologize @norm21499. I shouldn't have been so angry when posting. Won't do that again!

One financial institution I am surprised doesn't have much of a presence in CLT is SECU. Unless I am mistaken, a lot of credit unions take a more minimal approach, but it is surprising that you don't see them uptown.

Yeah, the lack of CU choices really stinks.

This is getting hilarious. We might as well also recruit the Falkland Islands and have our own overseas territory while we're at it. "Charlotte: The Imperial Mid-Size City Fit for a Queen"

I’m serious about the film industry.  NC and Ga have become huge players in the film industry.
