The jurisdictional transfer of the road (Corrine Drive/Forest Avenue/Virginia Drive) was approved by City Council and will come to Orange County Commissioners in a few weeks. We have been working on this for years, and following final negotiations, the City will be the lead for this corridor and will receive some funding from Orange County for road repair and repaving. You’ll see some physical road work soon, but the big project, while still on track, is a few years out, For example, we identified a need for a mid-block crossing on Corrine between Winter Park Street and General Reese Avenue near the East End Market. Our transportation staff moved forward with design/bidding/ construction just in time to have the national supply chain issues impact delivery of the final products needed for the project. Right now, this construction is anticipated before the start of the next school year.

Before one shovel even touches the ground, there is still some planning to be done to make the concept plan shovel-ready. The engineering for this project is included in MetroPlan’s priorities. Once the funding is in place, the engineering should be complete the following year, which would allow the construction bid to go out, allowing for construction to begin sometime during the 2024 – 2025 fiscal year.

This project will improve safety and accessibility for all types of transportation modalities. It will include a pedestrian and cycling trail, eventually extending into Lake Ivanhoe’s Gaston Edwards Park at the end of Virginia Drive at Orange Avenue. There will be a redesign of the road to enhance walkability and safety near Audubon Park K–8, and the plans address more turning lanes along with larger sidewalks to make the retail and restaurant corridor more walkable.

SIAP...

Read an article in the OBJ that it looks like Modera is trying to build a new complex where the current Gilt (formerly Roxxy) nightclub is. Wonder if this had anything to do with the Gilt owners buying half of Wall St.

From attending some events due to my interest in the Corrine project and now this, the NIMBY crowd in this part of town is so insane.  This couldn't happen to a nicer group of people.  They deserve everything they get.  I hope they build a new super gaudy nightclub right in the middle of the street and Corrine or Bennett has to branch around it like a service plaza on the Turnpike!  And I hope their sidewalks start rolling like a rollercoaster and the bushes start blooming with fluorescent orange flowers that smell like raw sewage.  LOL.  Ok, that's a lot too much, but it was fun to type.

The Corrine Drive Raceway is taking baby steps to be transformed into something other than a wannabe NASCAR track for the Garden District/Audubon Park. It’s been a long time coming:

Orlando’s Corrine Drive overhaul is marathon of small steps, with construction finally on the horizon

To help start the slowdown of the Corrine Drive Speedway, the city is installing a mid-block crosswalk with beacon so folks can cross over to the East End Market from the Audubon Park side.

Buddy and Commissioner Robert Stuart were there to kick things off. Good job, guys.

While it's an improvement, the first guerilla urbanism / pilot project crosswalk was done 2013. It took 9 years to get one permanent crosswalk. It'll take another 5-10 years for the full design to be implemented. How can it take almost 20 years to fix 2 miles of road??

The joys of different jurisdictions alternately fighting over and ignoring it. Now that they’ve sorted that out, hopefully progress will be quicker. We should also add that changes in the neighborhood also slowed things down (it was so bad, Patty Sheehan redrew her district to get away from it). We’ve gone from retired vets who actually went to war against sidewalks to more of a Birkenstock crowd lately. It does make a difference. The cut-through crowd who think it’s their God-given right to drive 50mph in a residential/small business area are also continuing to make noise
