I have to wonder how they propose the provide the "structure" for the new tower. Was the original garage designed for such a large addition? I can't imagine it was. It could be an expensive build.

That was my first thought.  If it requires a big rebuild, it seems it'd be cheaper to just level the thing and start from scratch.

The garage owners have recently renovated the lobbies, elevators, and started a concrete refurbishment project that has spanned several months (still not done).  So those would all be odd moves if they were going to demo the garage.

The design of the garage features some interesting structural choices that, ironically, make it almost feasible (in my opinion) to build this tower without demolishing the parking garage.  (1) The central double helix is hollow - could put structural supports in there.  (2) The large open spaces on either side of the double helix provide even more space for structural supports and elevator shafts.  (3) The land is not fully occupied by the garage on the north and south sides, so you could have more structural and elevator construction at either end and consume the small plazas that currently exist.

So I can see a way for them to do it, but I still think it's unusual.  However, if they have "done the math" and determined that it would cost way more to build a new parking deck than simply incorporate the old one, then maybe it truly does make sense!  Either way, I am excited to see what happens with this.

I always felt the same way about both getting out onto Deaderick or Charlotte and the confusing keypad. It was always an adventure getting in and out of there. But verrry convenient.

I really hope this project is realistic. Here is a photo I took on Friday from above showing the double helix. I used to park in this garage and my experience wasn't particularly positive. The garage will definitely need some upgrades if it were to serve high end commercial tenants.

Also I had never experienced a more complicated elevator button pad than this :)
