Unlike the Toyota deal, Triangle Innovation Point is very close to the rail lines. The State of North Carolina still looking into building a commuter rail line that goes through Moncure.  If, big if, this goes through then the state can justify going through with the commuter rail project with a station in Moncure mega site.

what Micron is looking for in terms of a new chip fabrication plant.

https://www.wraltechwire.com/2022/01/06/chip-maker-talent-power-favorable-regulatory-environment-among-new-plant-priorities/

and metro Austin is tough competition too but with Samsung's $17B plant just announced I think someone else would want to come to NC

https://www.commercialsearch.com/news/micron-eyes-greater-austin-for-40b-chip-plant/   and they do mention Chatham County in this article too.

to follow up about Micron looking elsewhere and not the NC megasite the Triangle Biz Journal reports this:

""The Triangle Innovation Point megasite in Chatham County is no longer in the running to land a massive semiconductor facility, sources familiar with the project told Triangle Business Journal. Sources added that North Carolina's inability to come to terms with the building of a post-treatment facility and the multi-billion dollar ask for incentives that included tax credits for decades may have been reasons why the chipmaker decided to pass over the TIP site, formerly known as the Moncure Megasite. The project faces stiff competition from several states.  The company notified North Carolina officials of its decision in the past couple of days, sources added.  Dubbed "Project Autumn," sources had previously tied the project to Idaho-based Micron Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: MU), which has already announced a $150 billion expansion of its chipmaking capabilities. The company noted it is exploring new sites in the U.S. and abroad. Austin Business Journal, a TBJ sister publication, reported earlier this month that Micron was scouting locations in Central Texas for a chip factory.""

A Vietnamese vehicle manufacturer which wants to build 250,000 premium electric SUVs per year in the U.S. may be close to finalizing plans to locate a plant in Chatham County’s Triangle Innovation Point megasite.

VinFast, a private automotive startup founded by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong, is closing in on an agreement to invest up to $7 billion in a manufacturing plant at Chatham’s Triangle Innovation Point — one of the county’s two megasites.

If it happens, VinFast would mark one of the largest economic development projects in North Carolina’s history.

As first reported by the Triangle Business Journal, VinFast would produce both electric batteries and vehicles at the site. Unnamed sources told TBJ that VinFast plans to occupy more than 1,000 acres in Triangle Innovation Point.

An official announcement from Gov. Roy Cooper’s office is expected within the week.

The company’s full build-out will eventually bring between 10,000 and 13,000 jobs to the TIP site, the 2,158-acre life science and advanced manufacturing park formerly known as the Moncure Megasite. It’s located in southeast Chatham close to the Lee County line.

FedEx is planning to open a large distribution center in a growing area of Chatham County.

FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) plans to operate out of a 338,000-square-foot distribution center in the small community of New Hill, a company spokesperson said. The facility – which is slated to open in early 2023 – sits along Pea Ridge Road near its intersection with U.S. Highway 1.

Axios Raleigh is saying it could be a Wolfspeed chip plant on the Siler City Chatham County megasite.  Wolfspeed is based in Durham.

""Wolfspeed, the Durham-based semiconductor maker formerly known as Cree, could be on the verge of a major expansion in Chatham County, if a state budget proposed yesterday evening is approved, two sources told Axios.  Driving the news: The budget plan includes $112.5 million for the state's Commerce Department as a potential incentive for a chip manufacturing project in Chatham County.  To qualify for the incentive, the chip manufacturer must invest at least $4.8 billion in the county and create at least 1,800 jobs.
Why it matters: The project would be the latest large manufacturing project to select Chatham County, directly south of the Triangle.

Along with the electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast, which recently selected Chatham for its first U.S. manufacturing facility, Wolfspeed would bring thousands of advanced manufacturing jobs to the county, and continue the Triangle's growth to the south.
Toyota is also building a battery plant in adjacent Randolph County, which is expected to employ another 1,700 workers.
State of play: Wolfspeed has bet big on providing silicon carbide chips to automakers and other industries. In October, the company struck a deal with GM to supply silicon carbide power devices for its EV programs, for example.  In April, Wolfspeed opened a manufacturing facility in New York to increase its overall capacity to produce silicon carbide chips.
Yes, but: In a statement last night, Wolfspeed said it "does not comment on external speculation or rumors about our business operations or plans."  What's next: Both chambers are expected to pass the proposed budget in the coming days. It would then be sent to Gov. Roy Cooper for his decision on it.""

Chatham County seems to be getting a new chip plant....formal announcement coming soon!!

https://wraltechwire.com/2022/09/01/wolfspeed-picks-chatham-county-for-new-semiconductor-plant-1800-jobs/

supposed to be tomorrow.  And this is a win for Randolph county too as it is so close and Guilford County and Alamance up the road as it will draw workers from all those areas including points east toward Cary and Apex and Durham and Chapel Hill.

Biggest investment in North Carolina history

Wolfspeed will build a new semiconductor plant at a 400-acre site in Chatham County with an estimated investment of $5 billion and a commitment to create more than 1,800 jobs paying $77,000 a year on average. But it’s going to cost North Carolina tax payers some $1 billion in a variety of tax incentives.

Semiconductor chips are a key part of most electrotonic devices used today.

The investment over time stands to be the largest in North Carolina history, exceeding the $4.5 billion commitment by automaker VinFast to build a plant. That investment is also going to Chatham County.
