Union Station  is  the crown jewel of the Gulch and is now well into its second century.  Here are several photos I have that shows it over the past century+.   The first is what it looked like in 1900.   The next one is as it was in 1941 with the original Mercury still at the top and it was a major passenger station.  Now we mainly ever see is long CSX hauling coal and goods.  The statue of mercury originally crowned the pediment of the Commerce Building at the 1897 Centennial Exposition and was incorporated into the station design in 1900.  It fell between the station and the Broadway viaduct on March 22, 1952 which I remember seeing it in dad's morning paper when I was not quite five.  The statue was unsalvageable as it was only made of very thin copper sheet metal as it was only made for the 1897 Exposition.    Here is the 8th Avenue overpass back in the early 50s. Passenger trains like this one in 1955 were boarded daily as Nashville was still an important hub.  The last photo is one I took a couple of years ago when construction had just started on the Grand Hyatt and the old locomotive that was displayed in Centennial Park for decades was on its way to be restored.    Since then Union Station has gotten a new roof and major restorations.

Photo order problems solved

Many folks are unaware that the Union Station originally featured a digital clock in its tower, reportedly a first such clock in the United States. The numerals were painted on heavy fabric bands, I recall reading years ago (I’m NOT old enough to remember this clock). Apparently this mechanism never worked very well and was eventually removed.

That's incredible!  I had no idea about this until you mentioned it here!  Here's a photo of it, although it's a bit hard to make out the numbers on the clock... still though... astoundingly forward thinking!
