Violent Crime in Charlotte

Recommended Posts

there are about 600 open murder cases in Charlotte over the years so reports Axios.  Here are 3 they highlight

https://charlotte.axios.com/304219/3-unsolved-cases-that-still-hold-charlottes-attention/      My question is where is this suspected burial site of Kyle who went missing in 2007 and reputedly under some apartment site in NoDa.  the apartments were under construction back then.  anyone know where that could be or where they are talking about?

IIRC it was Edgeline Flats at Davidson and 15th.

6pm on N. Tryon

He said the woman walking down the street and carrying a long weapon opened fire.

“At which point, she raises the gun,” said the chef who did not want his face shown on TV. “I duck down in my passenger seat. A group of shots rings out. I hear glass breaking immediately, which is my car being shot.”

A barrage of rounds struck the chef’s car several times on the driver’s side.

“There’s a pause,” he said. “Another volley of shots, at which point I hear my rear windshield being shot.”

The chef said a bystander then tackled the shooter.

“People start screaming once they see gun,” the chef said. “He grabs her to try and wrestle the gun away from her to try to wrestle her around.”

The bystander was shot, the chef said.

“I was thinking the man who tackled her was probably in very bad shape, and I felt terrible for him,” he said.

The chef, who was not injured, said that person likely saved his life.

CMPD said the two shooting victims’ injuries were not life-threatening.

This is crazy!

How many shootings are emotionally stable people evaluating the situation, considering alternatives, attempting to resolve issues in various ways and then resorting to gun violence once the risk/reward proportion tilts in their favor?

This situation above is more like how most of these arise. The reason I do not take out a convenience store is not because I have determined that the inevitable risk to my health, reputation and freedom is on the line, it is that it never enters my mind to take out a 7-11.

I'm all for Psychiatric hospital's coming back with strict government oversight compared to no oversight before. If someone's a danger to themselves or others, they shouldn't be in jail, but a place that can rehabilitate and evaluate them.

I saw this chart recently which highlighted certain cities.  I wonder where Charlotte stands in comparison to Atlanta.

Couldn't find the rate but in 2021 CMPD reported 98 homicides, I get a rate per 100,000 of 8.9 from that number. Probably slightly less than Los Angeles on the list and much lower (1/3rd?) than Atlanta.

Charlotte is a lot safer than Atlanta and Dallas.  It’s also a lot safer than Durham.  It’s about the same as Nashville.

Surprisingly, Raleigh is  a lot safer than Charlotte.

The amazing place though is NY, which has the best police department in America.  Every major city could learn something from it.

I am just back from a 4000 mile plus road trip but last night I was in a suburb of Jackson MS.  Inside their city limits they have a murder rate of 100 per 100,000 people.  Something about that I-55 corridor from New Orleans to Jackson to Memphis to St Louis all some of the worst murder rates per capita.  They had a murder while I was there and I was just there overnight.

(I am glad I stayed in the suburbs!)

closer to home Raleigh has always had a lower murder and crime rate than Charlotte and nearby Cary is one of the top 10 safest cities in the USA over 100,000 people.

Durham is a mess though.  DT Durham is nice, but crime in Durham overall is a disaster.

For that matter, there have been five murders in CH this year, which I find shocking having moved here from Myers Park where there is no violent crime.

Overall, the South and the Midwest have the highest crime rates.  All cities should study  NY because they’re clearly doing something right.

Yes Atlanta surely has had spates of terrible crime  in the past but here are the stats in the last decade and crime is indeed on the rise in Atlanta especially murders and assaults.  Property crime is way down.

https://33n.atlantaregional.com/friday-factday/atlanta-crime-in-historical-perspective-2009-2021

Crime is indeed down in Charlotte in 2021

https://charlottenc.gov/newsroom/cityhighlights/Pages/2021-Crime-Report.aspx

crime in Durham is up (at least through this 2018 graph)

https://www.macrotrends.net/cities/us/nc/durham/murder-homicide-rate-statistics

Homicides in Durham did increase in 2021 according to local reports

https://abc11.com/durham-crime-murder-rate-spike-in-homicides-police/11544529/

some of the randomness of crime recently nationwide is what seems to be upsetting many people.
