The Coronavirus thread

So I see the stimulus money is going to wrong bank accounts, dead people, and not to living people where the IRS should already have their bank account info like myself: https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/stimulus-checks-being-sent-wrong-011537505.html Ridiculous. The federal government is a damn joke. A squirrel could do a better job than this. You can’t even log into the IRS website to check the status of your payment either. It just gives you some stupid error message.

Oh and it gets worse. The SBA money has dried up: https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/349-billion-ppp-coronavirus-loan-program-for-small-businesses-runs-out-of-money-in-13-days-143606277.html

Would any of you finance gurus care to comment on this?

It has troubled me intuitively but I can't say I understand all the perspectives.

Poor guy. Hate to see the great man under so much heat. He needs a private jet ride down for some more Miami swinger parties to recover.

So at Target I overheard a man talking to the cashier about how he just moved down here from NJ a few weeks ago, and he was expressing how excited he was to get away from the “hot spot zone” of the virus.    It’s amazing to see how even during an epidemic there are people still moving to Charlotte.  A pleasant thing indeed.

Been thinking about Sweden, which is paying the price for failing to shut down.  It's even more  poignant when you compare Sweden to North Carolina.

Sweden population:  10.23 million

There are 13,451 cases  of Covid-19 in Sweden; Sweden has had 1333 deaths.   Sweden had 14 cases on March 5.

NC population:  10.49 million

There are 5,589 cases of Covid-19 in North Carolina; NC has had 155 deaths.  NC had 2 cases on March 5.

(Our economies are about the same size too -- NC GDP = 580 billion; Sweden GDP = 600 billion, by the way)

Sweden has two metropolitan areas with more than 1 million people.  NC has 3.  Sweden is a rural country with only 62 people per square mile compared to NC which has 213 per square mile (so much for the notion that rural = safe).

The busiest airport in Sweden transited about 23 million passengers in 2019

The busiest airport in North Carolina transited about 24 million passengers in 2019

Sweden has just two land borders, Norway and Finland - both of which implemented  strict rules about social distancing and sheltering in place.   Norway has 6840 cases and has had 165 deaths.  Finland has had 3369 cases and 75 deaths.

Norway, like other European countries that took effective steps to halt the virus, closed it's national borders (North Carolina did not close its borders).

Norway's response: https://www.euractiv.com/section/coronavirus/short_news/norway-update-covid-19/

Norway with 1/2 the population of Sweden, has conducted 2x the number of tests (128K in Norway vs. 54K in Sweden).

Add to all of this that Sweden (like most Europe nations) are remarkably homogeneous.  Homogeneity gives people a greater sense of common purpose making conformity more common; in diverse societies like the US conformity of purpose is harder to reach except in times of extreme crisis, typically war like after Pearl Harbor and 9/11.  (There are many, but here's a study from Duke comparing homogeneous vs diverse groups:  https://socialequity.duke.edu/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Mere-Membership-in-Racially-Diverse-Groups-Reduces-Conformity.pdf

I wouldn't hold Sweden up as a model as an effective response to Covid-19.

Thank you Boeing. It is time to reopen the economy. Full steam ahead:

https://www.seattletimes.com/business/boeing-aerospace/boeing-will-resume-work-in-phases-next-week-including-a-restart-of-737-max-production-preparations/

“Boeing said Thursday it will end its local factory shutdown next week and resume all commercial airplane production at its Puget Sound and Moses Lake facilities. About 27,000 local employees will be back on the job.”

We get it. Some old people do survive.

80% of US coronavirus deaths are among people 65 and up, CDC says ...

I guess I am more hopeful and try to be positive instead of only negative news all the time.  WE all know how bad this virus can be BUT people are surviving and those stories are not told as much. I just don't see how negative posts constantly help anyone through this health crisis.    and thanks for compiling all my success stories.

Understand. But we can't imagine a pandemic away. The reality is that people are dying every minute.

You can be positive, but you also got to be realistic also.

Again, some same people who were optimistic before and said the virus was never going to come here and impact the economy, are the the ones facing financial hardship, because they didn't prepare. Same thing happened in 2007.

If you don't learn from your past, you are destined to repeat it.

Not an issue with you, but generally, I get it, more people survive than die.  The problem is the thousands who aren't surviving and the potential long-term health issues for survivors.  I also get that people need good news in times of crisis.  Sadly, unfortunately, positive" news is being as an example of people "overreacting" by the anti-government factions.

FWIW, on Thursday, the country saw its worst 24-hour death rate since the outbreak began. 4,591 people died in the country, nearly double the previous single-day record.

As others have said, I think we all love the survival stories. It's just that there are a lot of deniers out there twisting those stories to show we don't need to continue to distance and test, test, test until we have actually scientific reasons not too.

Trump knew all along and let this happen....

Negligence

US intelligence agencies alerted Israel of the #COVID19 outbreak in China already in November. The US intelligence community reportedly became aware of the emerging disease in Wuhan in the second week of November.

I personally like hearing the survival stories of those that are especially susceptible to this virus. I don't think being positive equates to ignoring reality. We all know this is killing thousands daily, which is incredibly sad. Especially when the stories are close to home. But it's very heart warming to hear the "against all odds" stories of survival of those that are expected to die. Their stories kinda need to be told. We can learn a lot that might help countless others.

Be kind and stay positive.

Help others how? Be blissfully ignorant of the dangers of covid19 to their health or financials?

How did this person survive? What preexisting conditions did they have? What treatment did they use? What is their race, gender, etc? There's tons of information to gain from these survivors.

I don't get why people's positive stories can't be told because some people try to use it for their narrative. The deniers are not the majority. These stories are usually tied to proper adherence to WHO and CDC recommendations. They need to be told. If not all you have are the deniers twisted version.

It becomes troublesome when poster(s) posts the same thing over and over and diminishes the seriousness of the situation. This is a serious threat and I hope people understand it.

My grandparents and parents aren't "on their last leg" like some people are saying, but they will die if they get this.

The minute we stop fighting for one other and value money over life is when we loose our humanity.
