If you look in terms of deaths per week Covid is the deadliest event of all.

So let's get cynical for a second: Will it get way worse this Fall/Winter with the typical flu season? Or will we maintain stability like the Southern hemisphere has managed to do due to all of the existing precautions?

I think this is highly dependent on the election results. 

If Biden wins there will be more effort towards masks and contact tracing/instant testing. Then I think we'll improve.

Otherwise, no way to know, it'll be up to the virus since we'll continue to muddle along with no country wide plan.

United States is 5% of worlds population yet now has 25% of corona deaths. Great job...

If Gaston County is any indicator - a TON of people.  That is what has me extremely worried.  My sincere hope is that sane, rational thinking people are truly the silent majority and see the urgent need to remove this individual from office.  I don't want to appear as an alarmist, but we as a country, a culture and and ethic have everything at stake.

I don't think it's alarmist in the least. How crazy is it that I believe 100k needlessly dying from covid (say 50%) is getting off lucky but that's how I feel. What if he starts a war or continues to encourage right wing domestic terrorism? All we need is another OK City. We've been through worse though. From what I've read of McCarthyism that was even worse.

Me too! We put up yard signs and volunteer for the DNC.  I can't really think of much else I can do as an individual. Maybe others have ideas??

Might be a little late, but volunteer to be  a poll worker if you are younger and in good health and not in contact with at-risk individuals.

@DH17Good suggestion and our son is doing that. I'm unfortunately to "at risk" to do that myself.

Desantis has moved Florida into Phase 3, which lifts most restrictions in FL. Cooper said phase 3 is likely for NC in October, which would lift most restrictions in NC.

We are all learning to live in this new situation for us. It is important to take precautions and distance when communicating with each other.

I was talking with someone this week about Governor Cooper and his actions and I think he has done adequately considering the unknown issues. He set standards for institutions and businesses closing and reopening with reduced capacities and hours of operation. Local governments which had more restrictive measures could then release their standards and make everyone look better. The local government was boosting business (a bit), the state looked less restrictive. There has been mostly acceptance, with a few rural sheriffs calling to their wild yahoos. The Local boards of education were free to make their own reopening restrictions and same to UNC Board of Governors and campus leaders, which puts them in the crosshairs for miscalculations. The Republican Convention was seriously downsized due to Cooper and that was an economic cost but he provided his own enforcement by making limited compromises even though the local committee was the organizing group responsible, thus relieving them of that task . He shouldered responsibility for others and gave cover when he could and drew lines and stuck to them when he thought he must. Nearly all of his press conferences were with Dr. Mandy Cohen alongside. The appearance was one of scientific reason and not emotion or politics, in my view. As I review the past six months I can think of a few things that could have been different, but that is with hindsight. Compared to SC, TN, GA, and other neighboring states there has been no whipsawing of the public.*

Montréal put on hard lockdown. Prohibits inviting friends to your home !. Lots more. Montréal is a center of Covid in Canada and has large populations of resistant residents such as conservative and hasidic jews, muslims and general uncooperative individuals. The Premier is hoping, and if this does not work, what is next?
