Not sure why you think this is SUCH a big deal. Hope the Redskins are next.

Blackhawks, Braves, Indians, and Seminoles also? All of these names have been around for decades. Why is it such a big deal now?

The prolific, systemic racism that is prevalent in the sports world is really quite disgusting.  For decades now, Norwegian descendants in the Minneapolis area have suffered under the mockery of their race exhibited by the entire Vikings organization.  These tone-deaf sports execs really have no shame when it comes to denigrating an entire race of people by portraying them as marauding, savage warlords.  It's no different than the Irish who have been portrayed as drunken, violent rioters by Notre Dame, and the Greeks whose culture has been appropriated by both Michigan State AND Southern Cal.  We should all join as one to shout down these unabashedly prejudiced individuals and denounce them as who they clearly are: RACISTS!

Gosh this is exhausting.

1) You’re being sarcastic but you’re kinda right.

2) More importantly, you’re downplaying the actual systemic racism that has exists and still exists that causes incredible pain and damage to black people especially but also other communities of color. Norwegians weren’t denied housing and the right to vote for generations, Irish aren’t targeted for arrest and incarceration, and Greeks weren’t held as slaves for hundreds of years. None of those groups were forced from their homes, experienced genocide, and relocated to geographic ghettos. Other immigrant communities definitely experienced their fair share of discrimination, but many have since been granted entry into the privileged fraternity of whiteness. There’s a difference between stereotyping or appropriating from marginalized and oppressed groups and doing the same to privileged groups. The Redskins don’t represent or support Native Americans and none of the brands that use black stereotypes in their branding are owned by black people or contribute to black communities. There’s levels of wrong and I wish more people would figure out what nuance is.

You utter numpty. Slavery had been around for decades by the time 1863 rolled around. Why make the Emancipation Proclamation then? Why was it such a big deal then? Segregation had been in place for decades by 1954. Why make it a big deal then? Gay people had been trying to get married for decades before 2015. Why was it such a big deal then.

These names and brands have always been a problem. They’ve always been racist. The tide is just now finally starting to turn against the morons and white supremacists who’ve defended them.

I thought the Florida Seminole tribe okayed the team name and mascot for Florida State?  And the Blackhawks were named after a Sauk tribe leader who lived in what became Illinois?  How exactly are those racist?  All you're doing by constantly playing the racist/racism card is devaluing the term, and then when there is actual racism hardly anyone cares because the term has lost all meaning and credibility by that point.  Braves and Indians I'm not as sure about though (I've never understood why Native Americans are still referred to as Indians or even American Indians, what do we call people who are actually from India?)

In regard to name changes....PERSONALLY, I think it gives the feeling that something has been done, when in reality no one is really actually affected by the name change.  Do I think sports team names should intentionally be derogatory or provocative?  Of course not.  However, there comes a point when the name essentially loses its relation to whatever thing it's based on.  Were criminals in D.C. motivated to shoot people because the local basketball team was named the Bullets?  Are small people belittled and shamed because their local football or baseball team is called the Giants?  Do team names based on animals promote animal cruelty?  How far do we need to take this?

Me personally, I've mostly used the term "main bedroom" in a multi bedroom residence.  For some reason "master" bedroom conjures up an image of lust and sexuality.....you know...a dominatrix in her leather and whips!!:tw_innocent:

So its been a week since the SBI report on the 4th street ketteling and gassing of peaceful protestors. Immediately after the police violence Putney promised us he would release a report on the incident which included body cam footage that he”had seen”. (The SBI report said there was no body cam footage, which I believe is a violation of department policy).

The silence is deafening.

Also no statements on the arrest of members of the press (Justin Francois) by the sheriff last week.

There is too much authoritarian bullsh1t happening everywhere (including Charlotte) for any of us to sleep easy. We need transparency and accountability.

I think the deafening silence from the local elected leadership is more pronounced for the victims that died in the mass shooting on the west side (not including the 2 unrelated killings in the University City area within the same time frame).  Where is Dimple and Braxton????

We can’t conflate these two things.  Although equally tragic, murder committed by an officer of the law sworn to serve and protect is more egregious.  However, that does not mean that murder of innocent people by any perpetrator should be met with less than equal outrage.  Systemic racism absolutely is a major problem and perpetuates much of this violence through suppression of opportunities for people of color (and other minorities - let’s not forget the LGBTQIA+ community, including those who also happen to have a darker skin tone or different hair texture), but it doesn’t absolve anyone of their personal responsibility to be a decent human being.  No excuses.  Politicizing our problems only makes them worse.  We need to stop blaming each other and instead start learning from one another; come to the table for courageous conversations without fear of judgment or repercussions; recognize that, as imperfect humans, none of us are completely part of the problem nor totally part of the solution; and, most importantly, respectfully hold each other accountable for achieving the progress we all want and need to heal.

I really enjoy the ongoing debate and discussion above.  The information and viewpoints shared are very informative as I’ve seen many sentiments relevant to my life and my niche area of my profession seemingly change over the last decade, but without people speaking very openly about them, especially people espousing different views.

I’d love to be able to see the demographic and socio-economic data related to all of our posters to better understand where many are coming from and to better assess whether and to what extent certain views are common across certain demographic or socio-economic groups, or are otherwise more nuanced and related to factors that are more micro than macro.  The only thing that bothers me about this discussion is the willingness of some to engage in name-calling and labeling (this applies to folks on all ends of the spectrum; I’m not singling any one person or group out).  The name calling will hopefully lessen over time as folks with different views become more accustomed to discussing these subjects.

I recognize I’m not contributing my substantive viewpoints in this forum, but I do appreciate what all of you have to say because the best thing a person like me can do right now is listen and keep doing my best to treat my fellow human beings from all walks of life with the dignity and respect they deserve regardless if I disagree with their perspective.

I am procrastinating so I thought I might rethrow this grenade into this thread. It is an accurate way to frame suburbanization I think. 100% of the residential real estate appreciation in Cabarrus, Union, Lancaster and York is undoubtedly due to Charlotte’s vitality, but the folks who benefit contribute next to nothing to the operation of the region’s economic engine.

I read this and asked myself, "where's the lie"? It's true.

I still remember one of my cow-orkers beating a path out of Mecklenburg County for Union County in the early 2000s to escape "high taxes" (but really I suspect veiled racism). When his kids reached school age, he openly lamented the overcrowded Union County schools and was *shocked* when they wanted to raise (his) taxes to fund more schools and school expansions. People unclear on the concept I guess?

Did he tell you about the woeful state of Union County libraries. My Weddington HS students never used them. Or the well and septic private systems which he had to amortize? The non professional fire department? Which he had to subsidize and for which his insurance was at a higher rate? Contract for rubbish collection?

Including all the anticipated costs it is still less expensive to buy and  live in a 4200 sf house in Union County NC than Mecklenburg, but the land costs are the driver of that and not the tax structure.

Some people look at the bottom line and not the individual entries on the cost analysis. (In some cases your suspicion is valid)

I don't think he really cared about any of those other intangibles. He just wanted out of the socialist (liberal) hellhole of Mecklenburg County and found kindred anti-tax souls in Union County because FREEDOM! I'm sure it will come as no surprise he's strongly anti-mask, We're still connected on Facebook, here was a post he made within the last month:

Quote
...this is one which really gets at something I've been mulling over the past few months. If I must jettison all of my culture, background, and life experiences which inform me to replace it with other cultural norms which I find at the worst, abhorrent, and at the least, objectionable, in order to be considered "not racist", then I guess 2 things are necessarily true. 1) I will remain a racist to my last breath in the eyes of those who wish me to repent of my sins before whichever deity the SJW mob would designate for such prostrations and 2) if that offends you, you will have to find a way to deal with it as I simply do not care and cannot be made to care. PERIOD.

That said, the concept of a 4,200 ft.² house boggles my mind and seems excessive to heat, cool, clean and maintain/clean (to each their own). Additionally, that house probably comes with a lot of yard with a lot of water consuming, HOA prescribed grass (another concept almost completely lost on me HOAs and grass). I also advocate moving to a fully PAYT system for waste/rubbish collection but it won't fly here in the near future (sadly), adding food scrap waste collection and continuing to push for more recycling. I do miss Seattle http://www.seattle.gov/utilities/your-services/accounts-and-payments/rates/collection-and-disposal/garbage-rates in this regard.

are the many Black and Hispanic families moving to the suburban counties for the better schools and more affordable housing racist as well?  Our suburban counties have all had growth in minority population and I am aware of many minority families who choose to live in the suburbs for schools and increasingly more affordable housing.

In all things I don't ever blame the individual, I blame the system.

Edit: Well, in SOME things I blame the individual

White people and minorities often take similar actions for different reasons. And even if they take similar actions for similar reasons, the effects of those actions aren’t the same when different groups take them. We, as a society, really need to be more sophisticated when we talk about and think about race. Everyone wants to put their kids in good schools and get quality, safe, affordable housing. But we live in an inherently racist system. When minorities pursue those goals they often end up moving into “white” spaces. When white people pursue those goals they often end up creating “white” spaces that exclude minorities, either intentionally or as a consequence of economic realities. Equivocating is stupid and counterproductive when there’s a really profound lack of equality. And it causes us to miss the point. Racism exists, plain and simple, and affects every part of American society. And white people benefit from it whether or not they are “a racist”. But we get so caught up worrying about the accusation of racism that we ignore the very real consequences of racism and fail to address them.

Of course this reflexive defensiveness about a more than likely accurate accusation of racism probably distracts from the broader point kermit was initially trying to make about the suburbs as an unsustainable and unjust construct.

Edit: This is a great TL;DR:

For me, the whole suburb/city conversation boiled down to affordability.  I was living in an apartment near Park Road Shopping Center 20 years ago, and when I was able to have the opportunity to build, everything I looked at in Mecklenburg County was jammed on top of each other.  I didn't want to live 8 feet from my neighbors on both sides and have crushing taxes.  I wasn't able to afford it then, and most definitely wouldn't now.  I appreciate where I am in Gaston County, and yes I do spend just as much money in Meck as I do in Gaston in terms of amenities (pre-Covid).  The types of development that plague most other counties in terms of density are making their way over to Gaston and sooner than later we will also be overrun with gridlock and higher taxes.  It's just a matter of time.
