See Uptown from a Satellite

Ok...reduced quality to take up less space...

So to see Uptown from space (better image)...

1. Go http://maps.google.com

2. Type in Charlotte Convention Center (some other things uptown don't always show up on search).

3. Click the "Satellite" link on the top right (above the results)

4. Use the slider on the left to zoom in.

Old satellite shot, but really cool.

it is also really cool because you can scroll out to see just how close we are to the mountains and such. The crowders mountain/kings mountain area looks awesome in the sat pics.

Here is a direct link to the downtown pic

Cool pic, but try to resist using any MS product :)

Bah. I have no problem supporting Microsoft when they do something right.Besides, you're not giving any money to Microsoft by using TerraServer. In fact, you're taking moneyaway from them by using their bandwidth and taking advantage of all the work that must have gone into building that database of images. There aren't even any advertisements on Terraserver! The interface isn't quite as nice as Google's (no click-drag navigation) but the images are extremely detailed, not watermarked, and free.

At slightly lower detail levels, they also have USGS topographical maps, which are fun and useful for doing things like sketching highway or rail alignments.

Microsoft just came out with a new version of terraserver called virtual earth. Not only does it have the closer in aerials vs google's images, but it has the labeled aerials like google just released recently, and all the navigation ease (and maybe a little more) of google's maps.

The two downsides that I see with terraserver is that it doensn't work will with FireFox (no surprise there) and the images while high res, are very old. For example it is missing the hospital in Huntersville that began construction in 2003.

If you really want a great experience, download and install Google Earth. It will let you fly 3D through many cities though unfortunately Charlotte isn't one of them.

Looking at the lack of cars in the parking lots downtown, or lack thereof, I would guess that this picture was taken on a Saturday or Sunday, of course with no Football game downtown. Also, looking at the way the shadows of the buildings fall, I would guess that it is in the late afternoon.

Yahoo maps now has satellite images, and a new much better interface. The images are much newer than MS and Google's images. They show the Westin completed, the Arena under construction, the new courthouse, etc.

They were taken before Courtside began, though.

It is also interesting, as it must have been during a work day, unlike the MS and Google images, as there are tons of cars in the lots.

Nice :D You can see alot of construction projects going around the city. I think thats Nordstorm that I saw on South Park too. They even updated Greenville,SC a city they usually don't have full coverge on satilite.

Funny enough, even with an early 2005 or late 2004 photo, it is still very outdated. Now we a complete and almost complete Arena, Courthouse, Imaginon, J&W, Courtside, Court6, and Mstreet, Cityview and Metro School. We also Avenue, Trademark, Midtown, Epicentre and others under construction. It is good to see some of those lots removed from the maps/sat images, but we have even more that are gone in real life.

Indeed.

I think it's kind of odd to look at uptown from above with all of the parking lots full. Where are all those cars going to go!?
