Strong disagree. Baseball parks have fit into the fabric of neighborhoods for well over a century, and casinos have ... not.

For every well integrated baseball stadium in a "neighborhood" I can find a casino that works as well (example, Crown Casino in the highly sought after South Bank neighborhood of Melbourne).  The biggest complaints not centered solely on gambling itself have been traffic (much worse from a large event venue with scheduled start/end times), encouragement to spend within the venue (lots of eating, drinking, and merchandise in a stadium), alcohol consumption, and the scale of the facility (clearly the Diamond dominates the area).  In addition, a stadium also adds heavy noise and light pollution.  As far as gambling itself, it is already available and currently centers around Sports betting.  In saying this, I still support the Diamond as well.

Another article with varying angles.  Content is definitely better than the headline:

Interesting take. Interesting how the article is very pointed in why at least the three developers interviewed all felt the NH site downtown was a non-starter, given the issues with the City Council and the mayor. That there was discussion indicated that one the biggest hurdles foreseen was the likelihood of NOT securing 7 yes votes on Council is telling.

IMHO Radio One will get the nod. Too much opposition to Cordish. The old Jeff Davis now Richmond Hwy is going to look different in the next 10 years. Logistically  the placement makes sense.  The corridor  stretching from  The Lee Bridge to Dupont is ripe for the picking  in terms of development potential. I can see  Radio Ones casino helping to be a catalyst . As more and more space gets absorbed on the southside  it only makes sense that Richmond Hwy will be an extension of  the momentum. Traditionally leadership in Richmond takes the path of least resistance. Radio One is a win win for the city. Logistically sound location, minority ownership, support from the community, willingness to modify and adopt.  I am not against  Cordish but they are not going to make it to the gate.  I think we  all know how this plays out in the end. Additionally Radio One has the power of the Media. They can broadcast all day and all night  all across the country  through their network of radio stations. Unlimited marketing  basically. No huge cost because they own  the stations. If I sank that much money in an investment there would be no way I would not take advantage  of my media power to insure ROI.

Excellent analysis and I think you're spot on in how this will play out.

Regardless of how I feel on the project, this dishonesty really irks me.  Things are dirty enough.

“Richmond, we view this as home,” Liggins told 8News. “Our headquarters are right down the road in Richmond.

No, Urban ONE's headquarters is in Maryland (Silver Spring), as is Cordish (Baltimore).  Their partner, Peninsula Pacific Entertainment, may now have a Richmond office, but they are headquartered in California (Los Angeles).  The only local group was booted in the first round (King William County).

8News asked Liggins for a response to Smith’s comments about their experience level in casino operation.

“We’re the largest minority partner with MGM in National Harbor and we own about 7 percent of it,” Liggins said.

No, per their own press release, they own a $40 million non-voting share out of a $1.4 billion project, equating to 2.9%.  That does not imply any experience but at least their partner has some.

Thanks for the fact check. The LinkedIn for Peninsula Pacific Entertainment lists Richmond as its HQ. is that incorrect? Did you do the same for Cordish? While I don’t think it should matter at all in this process, the answer in ties to the Trump administration were misleading or dishonest.

Ah, it looks like they have recently updated their headquarters to Richmond, at least on LinkedIn.  They were listed in business publications as being headquartered in Los Angeles just a couple of months ago, which is when I originally did most of the research into all of the proposals and their backers, hence why these jumped out at me.  That shows some serious confidence and it is odd that there was not any noticeable announcement about their "relocation."

As far as Reed Cordish, I agree that only mentioning the work with prison reform does seem a bit misleading.  Though he was only involved in the administrations' first year, it looks like he was also an advisor for infrastructure, which actually seems relevant to the company's experience.  Regardless, that is a response in regards to others' attempts to discredit Cordish for political affiliations rather than legitimate concerns about the group or the project itself.  I have not seen them misrepresent their ownership, experience, or try and act as if they are a local Richmond business.  Had Cordish done that I would be just as annoyed.  Honestly, based on Norfolk's forum, I was expecting Cordish to come off sleazier than they have.

Agree this was always going to be the winner.  This is disappointing though, we were never going to get anything like MGM at National Harbor, but we could have done better than this.  Maybe something riverfront in Manchester, closer to downtown, a big tourist draw. Instead we have  the people who run Rosie's conveniently out of the way on southside.  This could have been something pretty transformational, now its just something most people will probably forget even exists.

I'll go there about as often as I visited Phillip Morris or as some would say - never.  On the other hand, there was a chance I would have gone if it was in SA.

No operator offered downtown or Manchester though...

I didn't say downtown, I said that Manchester is closer to downtown.

And they would have offered Manchester if it meant they would win the bid.  But the city gave no real input or advice on preferred locations, and when one of the casinos tried to change their location to meet preferences the city wouldn't allow it for no real reason.  We boxed ourselves in to limited options.
