Rebuilding Second Avenue

The surface parking lot just to the north of the main block that was affected by the bombing is fenced off. This is the lot that consumes the whole block bounded by 1st Ave., 2nd Ave., Church St., and Bank St. Is something happening with that lot as part of the rebuilding? It seems like one of the more glaring pieces of underutilized land downtown.

That's the lot where I've dreamed a modern rebuild of the old Maxwell House hotel that burned down 60 years ago. In my dream it's the same exterior style (Italianate), but 7-8 stories and with verandas on the river side.

Can you tell what the lighter grey areas are?  Is it just a design…or will they be made to look like windows…or what?

The city won’t be hiring a contractor. This is a privately held property.

Maybe they're still wrangling with the historic commission over how to restore them.

It’s all about the money right now. This property has gone through the SP process and I believe has preliminary approval.

So is there a plan to finish the cladding with at least paint? As it stands , it’s butt ugly. Maybe even beats out Haven as the worst looking building in the city. The old red brick even looked better , now that we see this!

I don't get it!  But that's been my reaction from the moment I first saw the proposal.  Granted, Historic Nashville is pretty damn ineffective in its mission, but where were they when this concept was announced?  Couldn't they have had maybe a little influence, such as trying to get  the height of the paintings to be aligned with the other buildings?  Couldn't they have tried to get natural materials at least at the street level?   Maybe they did (I doubt it), but with as much bloviating they do about Second Avenue and Broadway, this strikes me as low hanging fruit.

To me that mural is almost mocking us.  It's like the building is saying "HA ha, you used to have stuff in this spot that looked like this, but now you're stuck with me!"

Cool, going from a large brick to a large cinder block with some "mural" I equate to grafiti versus forcing them to maybe use different materials to give an illusion.

IMOH, they should have made them erect a faux facade. With real windows , even if there’s nothing on the backside but a wall. Make it look realistic, and blend with its surroundings . Lord knows AT&T has the resources to do something more , they just took the easy way about this.  
they won’t let the other buildings damaged, to just be torn down and new buildings replace them ( I get it, try to restore to the best ability) but my point is the small guys & girls who lost everything, have to jump though so many hoops to get 2nd ave to look like it did. But there’s no pressure it seems to get the corporate giant to at least try to make its building fit into the surroundings
