I know nothing about Emma's as a business -- I just remember the commercials with the old man with the ridiculous inflection on "thee soo-poi-luh-tive floh-whist." I don't know if they were actually superlative.

I ate at Rotiers a few times. It had that classic hole-in-the-wall/dive charm to it. The burgers were good -- but let's not pretend like they were the best in Nashville (despite what one James William Buffet might have said).

There is something discomforting about watching things that you grew up with or had fond memories of lying in ruin. I can understand that. Believe it or not, I could even understand if someone feels that way about the Beaman or Jim Reed site, especially if someone has memories of buying cars there or working there.

But very few things last forever. Even things that do stay tend to have to evolve with the times. Businesses come and go -- even ones that are considered institutions. Buildings are constantly renovated to keep up with the times -- and some end up like this particular one -- a grotesque mutation of the original building (like many older houses in Midtown).

 

 

I'm trying to prepare people for what is coming in Midtown*. Old Nashvillians aren't going to like it. Aside from Vanderbilt, the hospitals, churches, and the park, the vast majority of old stuff is going to disappear. There are a few things worth saving -- but I think it's time people made peace with the fact that a lot of the old houses (now businesses) aren't really worth saving. They've been modified and mutilated, and they really just don't fit the increasingly urban and higher density landscape we are seeing develop over there.

Is that an old Gerst Beer sign painted to the wall of the old garage building (at right)?  If so, it's been covered by the Rotier's building since that one was built.  Is it possible to get a better photo of it?

Not directly related, but across Elliston/Church from Sinclair.  Can anyone here confirm if Martin's BBQ is being demolished right now or not?  There's a proposed apartment building for that site, right?

Martin's BBQ is still in operation.  Probably going to. be a drawn out legal issue since they have a long term lease on the site.

I was not that surprised given this little vignette: I worked doing sound at Muthers, a large rock venue on Lafayette which among many other national acts hosted Quicksilver M.S. , Skynyrd,, Freddie King, and Bruce Springsteen. One night beforementioned beauty (maiden initials P.S. who unbeknownst grew up near me on Jocelyn Hollow) accompanied me for a show I worked. One of the waiters started badmouthing D. Fogelberg not knowing the relevant connection. She got upset and protested at high volume "he's my boyfriend", and he guffawed, also at high level "you too?"

A few years after P.S. divorced him I saw that D. Folgelberg died. (2007, age 56). He was part of the '70's Nashville songwriter folk/rock music lore, like J. Buffet, Kristofferson, David Loggins, Billy Swan and Dobie Gray. Seems like more than half of the famous musical stud icons that I used to envy so much as a young female focused guy myself, many them died before 60. Should mention that there were two more (that I knew of) similar 3 story apartment buildings further down 24th towards Charlotte across from the park, abandoned for quite awhile before teardown.

THanks! I love hearing about Nashville in the 1960s/70s... those who experiened it make it sound like the most enlightened place in the whole world (LOL).  I often had that "late to the party" feeling when I was in Nashille for college in the late 1980s.  It was pretty slick and was going through (believe it or not) a boom.  It was a 'cute' boom for those of us from truly booming places, but I enjoyed seeing it. I actually enjoyed it more in Nashville than I did in Atlanta.  Felt much closer to it.

Emma's used to have an apartment over the flower shop which was rented by my art teacher at Watkins, Gus Baker. He invited the class to his place for a party once. I was a teenager and had never seen such a  classy place, nor met anyone like  Gus. His paintings were all over the walls and he played classical music on a baby grand piano. He could also recite poetry from memory. He asked if I wanted a drink and I said I didn't drink, so he said he would fix me something that looked like an alcoholic drink so I wouldn't be embarrassed.

I just happen to drive through that area last night and quite frankly I was surprised to see the area cleared completely.  It was kind of weird seeing that area totally razed.   I also couldn't help but think the Sinclair better get built.  Otherwise it'll end up being a parking lot for Vandy football games and Chili's...

If I’m interpreting it correctly, they just had their Final SP approved on 8/9/23. Fingers crossed this one moves soon!
