Moxy Hotel (Completed)

Recommended Posts

No renderings yet.

"Construction of a Moxy Hotel on the former Baymont Hotel site located north of 12th Street and east of Atlantic Avenue at the Oceanfront. The project site is approximately 0.54-acres. New site construction includes a building, horseshoe entrance, site utilities, landscaping and connector park improvements."

Moxy hotels are usually pretty stylish, haven't seen an ugly one yet. It'll be nice to see that South Beach vibe that seems to be implanting itself on the north end extended up Atlantic a bit. Perhaps we can get the rest of the hotels in the area to step their game up.

This Moxy is in South Beach, so with VB going for more of a Floridian look I imagine the one here will look something like this.

EDIT: it also keeps a traditional enough look while being modern.

So I work for the City of Virginia Beach Department of Planning & Community Development and have seen the renderings and site plans submitted for the Moxy. I can’t share them publicly quite yet but I’ll say I love the look of it. Wish it was a bit taller but it’s like 11 or so stories which isn’t too bad. Stay tuned for updates :)

Sorry guys, just checked the renderings again and it looks like it’s actually only 7 or 8 stories :(

Still looks really nice and modern though! If I had more power with the City I would tell the developer they need more height haha.

Looking at the South Beach renderings that doesn’t surprise me, although I’d like to see VB go for more height at the Strip.

The Virginia Beach one looks bigger than the Miami Beach one. It’s an L shape with rooms facing the ocean as well as rooms looking out from the side. They all look like they have balconies. I actually prefer some aspects of the Virginia Beach design. But yes, I want height at the Oceanfront so bad! It’s like geographically Virginia’s face to the rest of the world. I get that Oceana is a huge part of the economy but if it weren’t where it was, we could potentially have a skyline like Miami Beach’s.

Years ago the city was trying to get the height raised at several locations at the oceanfront. The sticking point was not the flight paths, it was the radar on base and the potential for taller buildings to block that radar from seeing incoming threats. There were talks about the city potentially paying to move the radar, but I guess those plans fell through.

Is there a rendering? As far as I know they haven't even finished the planning process.

Not to my knowledge & I haven’t seen anything come across planning, which I also thought was interesting. There weren’t any permits posted, no renderings on the fence, and no equipment on site. At least it’s not an empty lot with a view of the Atlantic, I suppose. The lot across Atlantic is also fenced off as well, not sure if that’s related but I assumed so.

There are renderings. They are submitted in our system with their proposal here at the Department of Planning & Community Development. It looks nice but wish it was taller. It’s modern at least. I don’t think they’ve been made public yet because we still need them to change a few design elements to meet Form-Based Code. I’ll ask for updates at work today.

None of the Moxy hotels are particularly tall, so that’s in keeping with their basic design. I’m just happy to get something modern down at the oceanfront for once.

Moxy properties can certainly be tall towers. Moxy NYC Chelsea and Moxy Boston Downtown are a couple examples ;)

Haha I know those are in cities of a much different calibre to Virginia Beach, but I always like to aim high and be overly-aspirational when it come to development in Hampton Roads lol.

Wait, what? How are they building this and we have no renderings? I'm confused.

Again, there are renderings. They just just haven’t been released to the public. Unsure why the developer hasn’t yet. You could submit a FOIA request to the Virginia Beach Department of Planning & Community Development and that should force us to release the site plans, elevations, and renderings to you. I’ll look up the DSC Record Number at work today for this project.

So, to confirm, the planning process is finished, correct?

Looks like it. The Record number in our system is 2021-DSC-013976. Approved Stamped Plans are included in document attachments and the case status is Closed, signifying the Planning process is complete. I’m surprised the developer didn’t release the plans or renderings for advertising purposes or hype.

Suburban Capital doesn’t seem to be interested in sharing/marketing their plans. They’re also developing the Hyatt Place at the Oceanfront and it was well under construction before any renderings were found and posted here.

According to the FOIA Request Center and per my request, these two files represent a FULL release for 2021-DSC-013976. Looks like 7 floors and 85 feet +/-.

I'm liking the size and the massing. Don't know how they get away with not submitting color renderings if this is the true "full" release as she states. I would think seeing the color and how materials mesh with the surrounding area is very important. We should not "have" to go through the FOIA process to obtain public information that should be readily available online in easily indexed format. Don't understand why they do this.

You don’t necessarily have to submit a FOIA request to get information from our system. I think it’s just a preferred method in some cases. If you get in contact with the person who’s handling the case you’re interesting in, they might just send you the info directly. The reason I was hesitant to share the renderings is because I’m not directly involved with this development so I didn’t wanna step on any toes of my colleagues’ work.

However, I will say that that Record file does have a lot more renderings, some of which include more color and various different angles, but perhaps those were prior to revisions being made and they only are releasing the most recent ones? Unsure. But Kim Dotson is super nice and helpful and I guarantee she isn’t trying to deceive anyone. Do you guys want me to ask her if I can share the other ones I found?
