I would rather see a 550 footer next and then a 600 footer then a 650 footer then a 700 footer and on and on. That way there's a lifetime of new benchmarks.

I never got why Ed Crutchfield at First Union didn't build One First Union Center, 42 stories, taller. It was only 2 stories taller then NCNB old headquarters, 40 stories

Yes this would have been the Four First Union Tower 80 stories and 1000+ feet.

Yes it was real but then a recession happened back in early 2000s and it was cancelled.

Not to start a flame war (if that's even still a thing), but  I found these print-offs from the Observer from August 2001 under a drawer this week.  I knew I had them somewhere.  There was a lot more CLT/RDU rivalry back then it seemed, and the O and the N&O each did an editorial about the other city.  A fun read and quaint to reread now.  Here was the view of Raleigh:

In Charlotte not anytime soon.  I just don't see it I dont think any of the banks would anchor such a building and that pretty much kills it here.  I do think more buildings in the 400-600 feet height range will happen.

I love the fact this state has multiple growing metros and cities.  I used to not like Raleigh (I think it went back to my ECU days not liking NC State)  But now I love Raleigh.  and Durham.  and yes even Cary (even though my college roommate of north Raleigh dislikes Cary to this day)  My familial roots are in Chatham County a fast growing part of the Triangle and my family heritage goes back 200 plus  years there.  I still prefer Charlotte but if someone said you had to move out of this area I would head there in a heartbeat.  But if you think our instate rivalry is something you have never seen what goes on in Texas!  They call their 4 big metros the Golden Triangle maybe we should call Charlotte-Triad-Triangle the Golden Crescent. 

how can anyone not like the Triangle area they invented Astroturf!

I think I am starting to see/understand some of the whiplash that Raleigh UPers go through with the crazy way their Rezoning Requests stoke excitement for Tall Development and then the Reality of feasibility sinks in.  @TheRealClayton mentioned examples like this on the previous page I think.  Glad CLT does at least have a decent amount of their proposed Towers breaking ground and not too many recent disappointments.

I have stated many times on Raleigh UP that all building height caps in most of downtown Raleigh should be lifted.  Let it rip and see what the market bears there.

In saying that most landowners in Glenwood South, Downtown are applying up to 40 stories zoning just in case.  But more high rises are on the way there.  Including the 32 or 35 story apartment tower at Raleigh's Union Station.  The Creamery is another project with a 32 story apartment tower.  So some high rises are coming downtown there.  I will be there next week and take my usual 100s of photos.  Watch for the UP up there to blow up!

Supposedly the Raleigh City Council is considering upzoning a good bit of downtown to 40 stories.  Hopefully they do because I think they've approved every rezoning request in the past few years.

So I’m a bit late to the party. What’s the height cap for downtown Raleigh? Is this kind of thing typical for most cities Raleigh’s size?

I believe Nasvhille used to have a cap on how tall buildings could be. Once they increased the cap they started having their current construction boom of highrises

An awful mishmash of low-density height  restricts from consecutive anti-development city councils. The current pro-development city council has removed the foot restrictions but has kept the old floor count limits. Now they spend half of their time reviewing rezoning requests. Complete waste of time so this is why they're reviewing rezoning all of downtown to 40-stories by right. Anything higher will need to be rezoned but so far there isn't demand for anything taller than 37 stories. Maybe in few years.  

Downtown Durham has a 300 foot limit without provisions but 'unlimited' with provisions though seems to soft cap just under 500 feet.

Just up in Raleigh and saw 4 cranes in the North Hills area, 1 over at the Raleigh Iron Works and 5 downtown/Glenwood South so I saw 10 in quick order. 

Don't want to get in a contest with Charlotte vs Raleigh but the Triangle is booming and Wake County is growing faster than Meck county just saying.

I was in Raleigh this week myself. Their stock of older buildings in downtown is impressive compared to Charlotte. They have a great dining/drinking area at Peace and Person and a few blocks nearby with some top notch restaurants. We went to Crawford and Sons. The Glenwood, Five Points, Oakwood and in/near downtown areas have substantial remaining residential stock as well. All the new stuff, as Kermit mentions, is the extra for the city. Our host lived in N Raleigh, ten+ miles from the restaurant and I noticed they used gps nav to find their way around downtown, even though one of them had worked in the State Assembly building for eight years. Weird.

I think we took them to their own city.

I was showing my cousin around town too but she just moved there 6 months ago.  Raleigh may not have the height of Charlotte but lots of places have the density of Charlotte's intown neighborhoods.

I think the whole character and feel of downtown Raleigh would instantly be improved by converting all their streets to 2-way. Imagine if every street in Uptown were like Caldwell Street - that's basically what navigating downtown Raleigh feels like.

That's the plan for a few of the streets however it has been delayed due to COVID and consideration for Bus Rapid Transit lines.  You also have to consider that NCDOT owns 4 major north-south streets in Downtown Raleigh they use for cross city traffic to the detriment of downtown.
