Piedmont Triad International Airport developments

With two companies manufacturing jets in Greensboro, this will only be just the beginning for PTI. I believe that PTI will become the Triad's RTP but instead of a cluster of research and biotechnology there will be a large cluster of aerospace/aviation companies. With Greensboro's resume now, I can easily see companies like Boeing setting up manufacturing facilities at PTI, maybe even some U.S. government entities or private companies that build aircraft for the U.S. government. But there is a spin off effect. Having a large presence of jet manufacturing in Greensboro will lead to attracting hi-tech manufacturing companies that build parts for these jets including the computer chips,  display screens etc. This could ultimately lead to aerospace research and design jobs (white collar) coming to the area. Maybe those niches of the aerospace industry could be the anchor for the planned downtown Innovation District instead of trying to duplicate biotechnology innovation districts in other cities in the state. I think this makes more sense because Greensboro is strong in aerospace/aviation. Greensboro has to build on its strengths.

UK aerospace company wants to build a $50 million facility and bring 240 jobs to Greensboro. There are more than 10 proposed projects considering the airport. The range of possible employment totals from these companies is from 250 to over 4,000. This means that at least one of these companies interested in PTI could employ over 4,000 people at PTI. More that twice the number Boom will employ. As I've stated, PTI is emerging as the Triad's RTP but instead of biotechnology it will be aerospace/innovation and these are high paying jobs. The kind of jobs the Triad desperately needs. HondaJet got the ball rolling and really it was the FedEx hub because that led to the third runway being built and with Boom coming to PTI, its having a direct impact in companies considering PTI.

"Piedmont Triad International Airport is in contention for a 240-job, $50 million maintenance facility by U.K. aerospace manufacturer Marshall Aerospace USA LLC, according to a legal notice posted Friday by the Guilford County Board of Commissioners."

"It's not surprising that Marshall is considering PTI for the maintenance facility given the burgeoning aerotropolis and advanced manufacturing already in the Triad, said John H. Boyd, a global site-selection expert with The Boyd Co. of Boca Raton, Fla.

"Even more so than pharma and biotech, the aerospace industry — given its very demanding, precision skill sets in manufacturing and engineering — tends to cluster when making location decisions"

In reference to the Triad.

"They’re starting to get a true cluster of aerospace,” said John Kasarda, a business professor at UNC Chapel Hill who has written extensively about the economic impact of airports. “Once you reach a critical mass, which they have there, this tends to have a multiplicative effect, and then it has a momentum of its own.”

Kasarda coined the term “aerotropolis” to describe how airports could become hubs of economic activity, and he wrote a series of planning reports about PTI more than a decade ago. The first, written in 2007 for the Piedmont Triad Partnership, a regional business group, cited decisions by FedEx and Honda to locate there.

“There are signs of PTI and its environs becoming the new ‘downtown’ of the Piedmont Triad Region, the same way that the Research Triangle Park (RTP) has become the functional downtown of the greater Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Region,” he wrote.

Makes a lot of sense with Greensboro based Kontoor Brands which is linked with Denver based VF Corp.  Boom Supersonic which is opening a jet factory at PTI is based in Denver.  The key to more flights at PTI is attracting more business to the area.

this is great looks like a firm creating 200 plus more aviation related jobs is strongly considering the area.

Here is an update from Boom Supersonic on their factory at PTI

^^ here is the important first paragraphs from that Biz Journal article:

""An unidentified company is considering Piedmont Triad International Airport for a nearly $56 million investment and 280 new jobs.

Guilford County published a public notice Wednesday of a July 13 hearing at which the Board of Commissioners is to get input on an economic development incentive grant to a company identified as Project Sage that is considering an investment at the airport of $55.7 million.""

the aerospace cluster at PTI is on a roll with HondaJet and Boom Supersonic and the UK firm and others.  Great paying jobs for the entire Triad.

Looks like Hondajet is expanding again according to local tv station and Business NC.

Guilford County prepping incentives for Honda expansion
(WGHP)
Guilford County is mulling incentives for Honda Aircraft as the Japanese-owned company plans a $56 million, 280-job factory to build a larger jet model, sources told WGHP. The county has designated about $713,00 to attract the project to Piedmont Triad International Airport, they said. The maker of HondaJets employs about 1,500 in Greensboro.

The expansion will increase employment at Honda Aircraft Company to close 2,000 at PTI. The new facility will build larger transcontinental jets.

Big deal coming on the heels of Boom Supersonic and Marshall Aerospace. PTI is definitely on its way in becoming an aerotropolis. As I've stated before, PTI is becoming the Triad's RTP. With aerospace and aviation as the cluster. PTI now has a pretty good resume in attracting other aircraft manufacturing companies such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin or Airbus.

Here is an article from 12 years ago about the failed Kinston Global Transpark and how the aerospace industry said no we don't want to go there we want to go to Greensboro.

"The plan was to build one around Kinston’s airport, but market forces blew it off course to Greensboro"
