Southpoint Mall is super sizing with up to 1000 apartments and a new hotel according to the Biz Journal rezoning filings.

""The owners of Durham's most prominent mall are looking to add more than 1,000 apartments and more than 1 million square feet of retail, office and hotel space to the property as traditional malls continue to embrace change in order to stay relevant.

Brookfield Properties of New York, owners of The Streets at Southpoint, is leading the redevelopment of the mall property that sits off Interstate 40.

this is good idea to keep the mall strong as it one of the 2 dominant malls in the Triangle and for sure for Durham and Orange counties.

I read the Triangle Biz Journal daily and in print too.  I like the Quadrangle Raleigh Durham Cary Chapel Hill and I hoping they combine the metro back together as the area is larger than metro Nashville.

The Triangle is fine, though I much prefer Charlotte and look forward to moving back when I retire.

That being said, it’s ridiculous that Ch Hill/Durham/Raleigh aren’t one metro area for statistical purposes. They are, in reality, one metro.

Massive rezoning for Streets at Southpoint Mall is approved. 

""The Durham City Council on Tuesday night approved a zoning map change filed by the mall's owner, Brookfield Properties of New York, to allow for between 1.2 million and 1.445 million square feet of commercial use, up to 300,000 square feet of office space, up to 200,000 square feet of hotel space – with up to 200 rooms – and up to 1,382 apartments.   

A Brookfield spokesperson previously said the goal is to evolve the retail destination "into a vibrant mixed-use community hub with additional retail, and new housing, hotel or office, offering a wide-range of transportation options designed for the future."

The zoning covers seven parcels totaling 132.57 acres, which is mostly surface parking. The plans show 26.58 acres would be used for residential development.""

I think this is good as malls have to evolved to mixed use centers to remain viable.

It has the only Nordstrom, and a couple other unique stores in the triangle so of course it draw lots of customers from Wake county and surrounding. It's also probably the nicest mall in the triangle in my opinion.

my cousin lives in southern Wake County in Fuquay and goes over there more than any other mall in the region.  yes orange county makes up a chunk of their business I am sure since there is no options at all in orange county.  Raleigh obviously has some malls but there are unique stores and the nordstrom is a powerful draw to SofS.

I think that most people in Wake County go to Crabtree Valley and  North Hills (at least the part across Six Forks where the Peloton is).  The new shopping complex in Cary is really nice too.  

It’s ridiculous that CH doesn’t allow chain stores and loses tons of revenue to Durham and Wake Counties.    CH is developing rapidly and is becoming dense.  It will be even more so with the new rezoning that passed this week.  It’s not a quaint college town. (I wish it were.)

Lastly, I’m surprised that the Triangle doesn’t have high-end stores like SouthPark.  It appears that the two regions are equally prosperous.

was looking for more information on this expansion of Streets of Southpoint.  I hope this is the plan to knock down the former Sears store and build these apartments.

I saw that somewhere.. I’m pretty sure that’s it.  It looks a lot like Fenton in Cary and like the new addition to the University Mall in CH.
